Does Transit connect 2022 1.5TDCI ecoblue has a chain?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

I have transit connect 1.5tdci 2022 and I have changed the cambelt recently. But I have been told that this engine has a chain also which is poorly designed and could snapp. Im not sure is that true. Can someone confirm that please?

Thank you

The engine is either a 1.5TDCi or it is a 1.5 EcoBlue.

I expect that on a 2022 model it is the 1.5 EcoBlue engine. Yes they do have a small chain that links the two camshafts together, and they do seem to be failing. The original chains were 7.0mm and the new revised chain is now 8.0mm On your 2022 model it could already have the new heavier chain.

The 8mm chain wasn't introduced until late 2022.  Chances are this engine will still have the 7mm chain.

As you're changing the cambelt already, how many miles has it done out of interest?

The engine is 1.5 diesel ecoblue as far as I know. It does have a dry cambelt which I changed myself recently. It does have only one camshaft on the top( only one pulley is on the belt. That's why I presumed is a 8V only. If it does have a chain as you said where it is and what is doing? The only thing possible is if it does have two camshafts one pulley on the belt and the chain is inside the head driving the other camshaft.

If that is the case this is a stupid design

This is a pictures from my engine side cover

1.5 EcoBlue is 16 valve and twin cam.  The chain drives the second cam from the first.

This is not a new design.  The 16v  1.6 TDCI was using it back in 2004 without any issues.  Most people never even knew they had a chain.  The problem on the EcoBlue is caused by too small a chain, hence the upgrade to 8mm.

It sure does have a chain, as seen in the very helpful diagram posted above by Tom. 👍

This is a sad news.... For how long the chain lasts? (the original thin one which I probably have) 😭

Some of them don't even last 40,000 miles.  It seems to be a complete lottery without any real way to estimate how long it will last unfortunately.

Just an update. Great news from Ford. I have the revised 8mm chain on my Van ☺️
