Unusual parasitic drain

Featured Replies

I have a parasitic drain on my 2009 Galaxy which starts many hours after the car has shutdown. I have an amp meter wired in permanently while I try to find this drain. So I flick the door and bonnet latches and then press the lock button on the remote to send the car to sleep, after around 15 mins the amp meter is displaying a draw of 0.01amps which is ok. Then many hours later something wakes up and the drain increases to 0.1 amp.

I'm hoping someone may be able to point me in the direction of a delayed drain like this as the diagnostic route is very slow, like one fuse removed per day!

Many thanks in advance

What radio/entertainment system has your car got fitted ? Please post a photo of it.

Many of the original factory fitted radios have a separate Bluetooth module which are well known for going faulty and waking up the vehicles Canbus system.

The usual location for the Bluetooth module is on the passenger side above the glovebox (need to fully remove it).

You can just unplug the Bluetooth module for a few days and see if it solves the problem. Replacments can be found on eBay for about £20

Thanks, that's brilliant. Thanks so much for your advice. Would you know which fuse covers the Bluetooth module?

There is no separate fuse for the Bluetooth module, it gets its power from the radio.

Sorry, I should have said I've already removed the radio fuse as it was turning on and off randomly.

There are normally two fuses for the entertainment system/radio. did you remove both ?

I only found one, in the central fuse box. Number six I think.

That might be the case on your model.

The radio has two live supplies. One is via the ignition (probably the one with the fuse) and the other live supply is from the Body Control Module and is live all the time, it keeps the radio memory alive for the time and radio preset information.

I've unplugged the Bluetooth module and now the drain is alternating every few seconds between 0.01 and 0.1 amp. Any ideas ?

Well that's a first !!

It would suggest that either the radio unit itself is the cause OR it is the instrument cluster. My move now would be to fully remove all the connectors from the back of the radio. Removing the supply fuse to the radio does not remove the radios connection to the Canbus system.

Thanks, I'll try disconnecting the radio tomorrow. Meanwhile I pulled the instrument cluster fuse, to begin with I thought I'd found the problem as the drain was a steady 0.03amps but then after approx. 8 hours up popped the drain at a steady 0.1amp. grrrrrrrr

So thanks ever so much for the prolonged support, having physically disconnected the radio and the dab module and pulled the audio fuse for good measure the drain has disappeared. I,ve ordered an android unit to install instead and i'm crossing my fingers that will be an end to the parasitic drain.

Just wondering if you got the parasitic draw sorted? Have same on my 2017 Galaxy and seems to be audio related. Would love to hear how you got on please
