Fiesta 2014/15 blowers not working

Featured Replies

Hi all

First post so be gentle with me please image.gif.604ea8f047cfee571bc9d115116ba7e0.gif

I’m trying to resolve an issue with the wife’s car that has recently happened
To summarise :
She has a fiesta 2014/5 Eco boost 1 L petrol

Recently, the air conditioning blowers are not working whatsoever regardless of how low or high the speed is turned up
All you can hear is some mechanical noises from on the dashboard when the blowers are turned on
The lights on the climate control buttons are all working fine and the display indicates everything is working fine

I’ve captured a video but don’t think I can share it can I ??

Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start looking, please ?

This is a UK edition vehicle and likewise we’re based in the UK but hoping there are similarities and synergies with other models worldwide
I’ve already checked the small rectangular fuses in the engine compartment fuse box with a multimeter and all are fine
There are some small square fuses that I have not managed to extract yet (how do you get those out, or can they be tested in situ ?) to test those also
Likewise, I’ve noticed there are some relays that again I haven’t managed to test as yet but plan to more of a case of a good overall health check of all fuses.

other than just checking all fuses on the electrical system, based on my description of blowers not doing anything even though they are turned up to maximum, Can anybody give me a pointer as to what is most likely cause please so I can be more targeted with my investigations?

many thanks in advance

Check Fuse 4 and check Relay 13

If both are OK then it may be the blower motor. Usually if it just the resistor pack the motor still works on speed 4.

Thanks for the quick reply @unofix

Can you offer any advice How to get fuse four out please?

These are the little square ones, and they seem particularly awkward to extract

I’ll try and do a test on the relay also

Thanks again for the quick reply 👍

Just a firm grip and a wiggle then just pull out.

Swap the relay with one of the other ones of the same type just as a test.

Thanks @unofix

Fuse 4 is good

im waiting for some leads to test r13 with a multimeter….should arrive tomorrow

I could try R7 which is a cooling fan relay or R8 which is the start inhibit relay as visually they look the same, but I’ve not checked the ratings to make sure they are identical

I might whip them out shortly and take a look

but from those definitions above, are they hundred percent likely not to be  involved in the blower circuit?

Only fuse 4 and relay 13 are for the blower. No other fuse or relay.

Just swap the relay, it's only for test purposes.

Ok thanks @unofix

I just swapped R7 and R13 around

They are exactly the same relay part numbers

It made no difference meaning no blowers working in the car but I still hear some “mechanics” happening on the dashboard, presumably as vents are opening/closing and then go quiet when the blowers are switched to on and the same in reverse when the blowers are turned off

Any further pointers and next steps you can give me a much appreciated 👍

Unfortunately I think next step is to remove the resistor pack. It is fitted with a thermal fuse which may have failed.

Thanks for the reply again @unofix

I think I found it and extracted it

It was located in the passenger foot well up in the central area

Assuming this is it…..

if so, is there a way of testing it please with the multimeter?

would the thermal fuse be within the black housing?

@unofix ….so in my Haynes manual it says the blower motor is in the drivers foot well

Please see attached two photos

I expected it to be pretty visible after taking off the plastic trim, but unfortunately not

If I’m looking at the right thing, it’s completely up and out of sight with what feel like other rigid pipes in front of it so it’s looking to be a complete nightmare to get it out

Can you confirm, please am I looking at the right thing here?

thanks in advance once again

Hi, @TomsFocus might be able to help explain how you can get to the blower motor. He's often good at finding units on eBay so you can see exactly what you need.

Thanks for that exploded picture @unofix

18456 the yellow item on the lower diagram matches the part on the photo I managed to take

it looks an absolute sod to get to and a genuine part I’ve seen quoted at over £500 !!!!

That looks like a blower motor control module for a vehicle that has automatic climate control, with a 6 pin connector?
Probable cause of blower not functioning.

The clutch pedal & master cylinder need to be removed for access to the blower on a RHD Mk7.  Some people choose to disconnect the steering column as well though I don't think that's strictly necessary.

There were thousands of Mk7s produced, it should be easy to find a good used blower if needed.

Agreed.  Cheap & easy to try that first.

Thanks @TomsFocus

From the Quick Look that I’ve had, the main issue seems to be 2 rigid pipes seemingly making it impossible for the fan to be removed as a result

they are covered in like a foam so I’m guessing these are related to the climate control

so as a competent diyer around the house with a decent range of tools, how would you class those items to remove in terms of difficulty ?

thanks for your input on this, it’s much appreciated 👍

Those pipes can't be removed.  They are part of the air conditioning evaporator.  Only option is to carefully manoeuvre the fan assembly around them by twisting and angling it in different positions until you find the right one.

The clutch pedal isn't too difficult to remove, but you need to be tall enough to remove the clutch pipe from the engine bay, or jack the car up to do it from underneath.  And the clutch system will need to be bled through after refitting the pedal.  The clutch will not work without doing that.

Thanks again @TomsFocus

it’s booked in later this week for a diagnostic check to confirm it’s the fan and nothing else and I’ll ask for a price and then take it from there

can’t believe a ford garage want over £1000 for the part and the labour, but then again I guess I can !!!

ridiculous cost
