Fiesta 2005 MK5 - Headlights not illuminating

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I’ve got a 2005 MK5 Fiesta and I’m currently experiencing an issue where the Headlamps aren’t illuminating as normal.

I can put the car into the correct position headlamps wise and the interior will illuminate, the side lights will illuminate but there isn’t much light at all coming out from the sides.

There also isn’t a Green Lit headlamp symbol indicating they’re on.

If I switch into full beams, they’re lighting up as normal with the blue full beam symbol.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting advice on this particular issue?

Sounds like a possible GEM fault.  The interior shouldn't illuminate via the dash switch.  And the main beam shouldn't come on without the dipped beam being on.  Initially thought bulbs were blown but if there's no green tell tale on the dash then they're not even being powered.

Hey @TomsFocus,

I think I’ve explained the situation to be fair pretty poorly.

If I refer to the 12 o’clock position, no lights come on.

If I select the side light position at 1 o’clock, the side lights come on

if I select the two o‘clock position for the headlights, the full beams come on with a blue symbol indicating it’s on full beam.

Ive checked the fuses marked against the two headlights and they’re not blown and swapped the relays in the fuse box under the passenger seat.

if I pull the stick back a further additional light illuminates as well as the full beam being engaged

Have you tried two new H4s ?

Looking at Haynes, dip/main relays are controlled directly from the switches, so it could be the dip switch contact in the multifunction switch, which may also feed the dash illumination.  Does the flasher work ?

@Paulkp the flasher does work yeah! I’ve got a new set of H4’s on the way too, so I’ll swap those out promptly!

I'm still a bit confused.

Explain what's going on on each position of the switch:

0:

Side: =o=

Main: =D

The interior lights don't have anything to do with the exterior lights.

Is it stuck on High Beam? (Blue symbol)?

Have you tried to deactivate High Beam with the indicator stalk?

I'm just guessing, but does the OP actually mean the instrument cluster lights when saying interior lights ?

Like you I'm confused. Think I'd start with a couple of new headlight bulbs before getting too excited and pulling the car to bits.

That isn't possible.  There are only 2 bulbs on a Mk6 -

1. W5W for Sidelights
2. H4 for Dipped beam & Full beam

It sounds to me like the dipped beams are coming on, but they're poorly aligned so not shining on the road.  Have you moved the level adjuster switch at all?  I would suggest the next step is looking at the actual lights to see which bulbs are on in each position.
