How do I check transmission fluid??

Featured Replies

Sorry, I've searched the manual and online but getting nowhere fast. I just need to check the transmission fluid as I can hear the auto gears changing/clunking during driving and Google suggested low transmission fluid. I can't find anything under the bonet that Google suggests is the fluid cap and dipstick. Can only find engine oil. I have zero skills in this area!  Thanks.

Yes, but Google is American and your car isn't.

So disregard information from Google and ask our very own Google gearbox specialist @DaveT70

As it's 2010  and probably Powershift (I'm not criticising it by leaving out the "f" cos ours is fine) I'll defer to @DaveT70. at the moment (If it is Powershift I have done this job twice and there isn't a dipstick plus the plug on the side is NOT a level plug) and I don't pay Ford stupid price for oil and filter - if it hasn't been changed at least every 3 years, it needs doing NOW)
However, if it's that bad, is there any sign of a leak?
My response should keep this at the top.

Ive only owned the car 2 weeks, only service history I can see if from 2016! I have had it fully serviced and the garage said it clearly hadn't been done in years. Would the transmission fluid be checked by them? Or is that not standard on a full service? They didn't mention anything apart from needing to flush the old engine oil out and the injectors chuffing (which are being sorted by a diesel specialist this Friday).

Gearbox is not part of any service schedule. You would need to book the car in specially to have that done.

Are you doing it yourself or getting someone else to do it?

There is a detailed process that MUST be followed correctly. It's NOT remove plug at side and top up until it runs out!

Cost about £90 for the oil and filter plus labour if someone else does it.

I can give details if needed.

It is vital and may solve the problem. If it doesn't, you are into another league of cost, so fingers crossed!

I would recommend having the fluid changed as you don't know when it was done last
