jerking at light press of the accelerator

Featured Replies

hi everyone,

iv just come back to ford, after owing a 1.0 Eco boost a few years back.

decided to come back with a 09 plate 1.6 tdci titanium. loving the mpg of 60+. its phenomenal compared to my last car, a jag xf 275bhp. (29 mpg)

my question is, if i put light pedal acceleration it seems to jerk/misfire? has anyone else experienced this. if i hold it at light revs, it seems to do it every 3-4 seconds, like a pulse.

im also getting the revs increase when i change gear, only slightly but noticeable enough, it also bogs down if i don't give enough revs when I'm first start off in 1st gear, is this normal for this engine,

apart from these little issues, i think the look and drive of the car is great .

thanks for any help.

When was the diesel fuel filter last changed ?

it came with a full service history, but i cant see any proof of fuel filter change? do you know where this is located?

thanks

Tom will be the best guy to advise you about your problems with a 2009 Focus. He'll be back on the forum tomorrow. @TomsFocus

thanks mate.

Fuel filter on these is fitted at the back right corner of the engine, as you're looking at it from the front.

They are expensive, £50+ for a genuine one, so often left out of a service.  The recommended interval is every 37.5k miles.

If you put that part number (1386037) into ebay you'll see plenty of aftermarket options.  Personally I would avoid the cheapest ones, and go for a well known brand at least, if not going genuine.

Is this a 90 or 110ps model?  I never had any issues pulling away with a 110 model.  Does sound like there's a minor issue with yours.  Injectors would be the top suspect at this age.

hi Tom, i think its the 110ps,

when its working as it should its quite nippy. but tends to bog down at low revs, and has this stuttering misfire if light pressure on the accelerator pedal. do you think the most likely suspect is the fuel filter, it almost has a chugging sound when trying to take off in first gear. when its at higher revs it has some pull.

do you think the over revving when changing gears could be related to this? iv only had the car a few days.

thanks for your help Tom

Personally I would be more inclined towards injectors.  But a fuel filter change won't do any harm and is much cheaper to try first.

The PCM does 'rev match' between gears for smoother changes so that may not be a fault unless it's excessively high.  It may be that you're changing up too early.

These don't have a huge amount of torque for a diesel, so if you've come from something better (for example, a Golf 1.9/2.0 TDI ) then you can't expect to drive these in quite the same way.  If you want a quick pull away you'll need to give it some revs.  But if you're just doing slow parking manoeuvres or a gentle pull away uphill in traffic, it should do that just on the clutch no problem.
