Mk2 - Engine Malfunction

Featured Replies

Hi I’m getting an engine malfunction warning on my dashboard and it’s lit up like a Christmas tree (see image).

I’ve got Forscan and shall provide a DTC read once I’ve done it.

Is this the common issue with the dry solder on the circuit board?

The engine still runs and goes but the rev counter stops working.

After a while it comes back to life and the engine malfunction warning disappears but then it comes back again.

It also disappears when you stop and restart the ignition.

DON'T PANIC !!!

It's almost certainly the infamous dry cracked solder joints on the back of the instrument cluster.

@rd457 will be able to sort you out and have it as good as new in no time 👍

Don't be tempted to try a bit of DIY soldering unless you are a professional. All of the old lead free solder needs to be removed and cleaned before the joints can be re-flowed with 60/40 multicore solder.

Thanks @unofix

@rd457 hopefully you can help. Can you confirm the cost to repair? I was hoping to sell the car on so didn’t want to spend too much.

Replied on ebay.

Fault codes are:

U1900-20 across 3 separate modules

EPS

PDM

DFDM

PDM U1900-20.png

DFDM U1900-20.png

EPS U1900-20.png

'U' codes are in themself not a fault or failure. They are simply communication errors between modules on the Canbus system, very often caused by a low battery voltage, a car being 'Jump' started or even just the battery being disconnected and then reconnected.

Unless there are other DTC's found then just use FORScan and clear the codes.

I used to get U1900s on Mk2 door modules quite often.

Not sure whether it was caused by the adaptor or whether it was caused by past door slamming breaking the connection briefly.  But it did seem to be Mk2 specific.

Either way, there were never any noticeable issues from those codes.

Sadly your engine malfunction warning was probably caused by a code which has since reset itself.  That warning is generally for PCM codes.
