Ford Focus Mk4 1.0L EcoBoost Gear Box problem

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I’ve had my car for nearly 2 years now. Roughly 3 months ago my gear box fully went. Broke down on the motorway and had to get a new one in which it was refurbed with warranty. A few weeks after fixing it, it’s gone again but it won’t cost as much this time. I love the car with all its benefits but just wondering if anyone else has the same kind of problems with their gearboxes?

It's under warranty.  It shouldn't cost anything.

The problem with a refurb is that they are only as good as the person doing them.  Anyone can claim to be a gearbox refurbisher, or even a 'specialist', they don't need any qualifications or experience to do that.  Same with engine refurbs.  Not worth it unless you trust the person doing it 100%.  There's no way to see how good their work is until it breaks again.

There have certainly been reports on here of issues with the Focus Mk 4/Fiesta Mk 8 manual box. From the same MX65 Magna Getrag family and apparently designed with cost considerations in mind.

I think the Manual Gearbox problems are only for the 1.0 Engined cars, the 1.5 Petrol and the Diesel versions use the B6 Plus box, which is designed to withstand quite a lot of Torque.

Difficult to get info with recent ownership changes, but I think** the 1.5 uses a higher rated Magna Getrag box 6MTT350. I believe this is also.used on higher powered MINI models (Cooper S and JCW).

I have seen mention of a few issues with the box on both Fiesta ST and MINI forums.

(**Anyone know for sure?)

I didn't think the Mk4 used B6 either, but haven't been able to find any proof either way.

The brochure just states '6 speed manual'.  Parts catalogue only appears to show one 6sp manual although that's not conclusive.

The Ford service site doesn't show the gearbox type.

The Mk4 Focus Diesel in both the 95 and 120bhp versions definitely use the B6 Plus Manual Gearbox rated at 330Nm, the same as my Petrol version but with different Gear Ratios.

That is the site I checked earlier, it didn't list gearboxes by name, just called them all 6 speed manual so I couldn't tell if they were different.

However, I have now realised that it shows engine type when you open up each one individually.

I stand corrected.

From this older thread (which refers to  Mk 3 Focus) the B6 is also a Magna Getrag, in this case the 6MTT250.

The original B6 only seems to be rated up to 285Nm, presumably (and hopefully!) the B6 plus has a higher rating as the Puma 1.5 ST and Fiesta Mk 8.5 ST produce 320Nm, which is possibly why I've seen 6MTT350 mentioned somewhere? I think the Cooper S and JCW (when available with manual) were also 300Nm or more.

The B6 Plus is rated at 330Nm as per this Screenshot.

That's great info, John.

Wonder if anyone knows the actual Magna Getrag** reference for the B6+, just to complete the picture?

Then all we need to do is remember this thread next time the question crops up!😀

(**Is it just me or does anyone else find auto correct keeps changing that to Magna Carta?)

I'm not at home just now but I'm sure I have some details for decoding the Plate on the Box, there may be something in there that is useful.

I’ll have a look tonight.
