Engine management light after central locking stops working

Featured Replies

Hi all, have recently had issues with my 2007 1.8 petrol Focus. The central locking stopped working and couldn’t even open the door with the key manually. When I did eventually get into the car the engine management light was on. Just wondering if anyone else had this issue previously and if so looking for advice! Thanks in advance.

Probably couldn't open it manually because it had just seized up with lack of use. Give the door lock a good spray with '3in1 Oil'

Could be a few reasons, car battery is very low on state of charge. Fault with the door locking module or quite possibly a problem with the GEM (General Electrical Module) caused by water ingress.

Is the car battery in good condition and fully charged ?

This needs investigating using FORScan in order to get the DTC's

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

Ah!!!!

Now that bit of info answers the question.

You have the infamous dry cracked solder joints on the back of the instrument cluster. It needs to be professionally repaired/refurbished.

@rd457 will be able to get it fixed for you.

Is this a common issue and is it a cheap fix

Very common and normally £80 or less.

@rd457 will be in touch soon 😁

My repair listing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314393033915

Is it the earlier Mk2 or the facelift? Could you please provide a pic of your faulty screen. The unit may well need the connector solder joints repaired, but lack or partial lack of content on the LCD will require a replacement LCD. Replacement LCDs aren't cheap, normal facelift ones are £50, tall facelift ones are about £80-90, non-facelift also cost around £50.

Red light is due to the boot being open. Also struggled getting in again had to climb through boot due to the locks not unlocking at all apart from the boot. And second picture without lights is what displays when car is off

And also would this effect the central locking

I believe that's controlled by the GEM. I think the security system that the IC is a part of is only relevant to starting the vehicle, so I don't expect so.

Regarding the pictured IC, those come in two colour variants, white/yellow text on red LCD, and black text on green LCD. You've obviously got the red variant. The green/red colour comes from LEDs behind the LCD. The white vs. black text comes from the LCDs themselves (specifically its polarisation filters). There's an ebay seller selling new replacement LCDs of the green variety, from China, no such new replacements for the red one. I don't know how well if at all putting a green variant LCD inside a red unit would work. So only other option would be to buy a used IC with a working red variant LCD. (Tip: in ebay listings, where the units are typically removed from their vehicles and thus powered off, the LCDs in the green variant look pale green, while red ones look black). It'll cost you about £50 to get a unit to scavenge an LCD from.

So do you think getting the solders re soldered would help with my issue?

It won't fix the LCD output, as I said you'll need a replacement, and I'm doubtful it'll fix the door unlocking issue.

As unofix said earlier, you really need to retrieve any fault codes (DTCs) from the vehicle to get a better idea of what's wrong with the locking issue.

I'm quite sure it won't fix door lock problem. That is most likely water ingress with the GEM
