Which Hose Is This Please

Featured Replies

Hi,

Daughter passed her test yesterday and is driving alone for the first time today.

She described what sounded like a fan belt squealing on her 10 plate mk6 fiesta.

Fair play she looked under the bonnet and sent me the following saying the underside of this hose was wet and she can see a belt underneath it.

She is at work and I am trying to figure out what the problem may be.

thanks in advance

Andy

The thick hose in the middle is for air con gas.  If the AC gas is leaking, the pump could be running dry.  Switch off AC immediately.  But safe to drive with AC off.

The U shaped hose is coolant to the reservoir.  If that one has split it's not safe to drive unless a temporary tape repair can be made.

Thanks @TomsFocus it’s definitely the air con that’s wet. I will get it looked at asap.

Is it just water or oil?

It is perfectly normal for this hose to be wet when the A/C is in use due to condensation. The temperature difference between the A/C gas and the outside air causes condensation. If it is just water which dries once the A/C is switched off there is no need to worry.

Oil however is something to worry about. This usually means a leak in the A/C system which causes the gas and compressor oil to escape. However when this happens the A/C will no longer work anyway.

Thanks. Feels and smells like water to me. The actual initial problem was the squeal from the fan belt, she assumed the water was dripping onto the belt making it squeal when first setting off. She is only 19, and it’s her first car, so we will get it to the local garage and speak to them.

For future reference a 2010 Fiesta is a Mk7 here in the UK.

Many thanks @unofix

you have puzzled me now

There is a wiki guide, and daughters car does look like the generation 6 inside and out.

Fiesta

I am certainly no car expert, have I missed something?

thanks

Andy

Wiki guide is totally wrong for the UK. Might be partly correct for most of Europe but certainly not the UK.

The production of the Fiesta Mk6.5 ended in 2008

Roger @Eric Bloodaxe has a explanation which he's posted many times before explaining where it all went wrong.

The Ford Fiesta Mk6.5 (also known as the Mk6 facelift) is a model of the Ford Fiesta supermini that was produced between 2005 and 2008. It is a revised version of the Mk6 Fiesta, incorporating several cosmetic and interior changes.

Wiki do actually get it right (at least as far as we in the UK are concerned) in the 5th generation section of their article:

"On 1 April 2002, the Fiesta Mark V was unveiled. This generation of the Ford Fiesta (Mk5) is often referred to as Mk6. This is because the previous model, the Mk4 Fiesta, was often called the Mk5 after it received a facelift in late 1999. In other words, the 2002–2008 Fiesta is the fifth generation model and what is often referred to as Mk5 is just a facelift model of the Mk4 – different looking front but still the same car."
