Sizzling Fuse Box

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

I've been running into a problem with my galaxy these past days. I was jet washing the engine and the wheels, and i'm not sure what i washed that it made the car's horn go off all of the sudden. Disconnected the battery and that was that. After putting everything back together the car wouldn't start at all and the dash was going crazy showing me all kinds of faults, this was when i realised that one of the grey fuses in the fuse box was making a sizzling sound. I disconnected the battery again the battery again and cleaned up to see if there was any wet spots left. Again i tried to get the car running again and it just won't start up and the fuse box seems to sizzle every time i try to turn the car on. I've tried jumpstarting it and it just wont work. Anyone has got any clue? I think it might be the fuse box that's gone or some fuse fried up.

Welcome!
Firstly, jet wash (ouch!) water and electricity don't mix but that may, or not be the issue.
It does sound like there is a poor connection on a major cable somewhere (or your grey fuse - check the connection there first?
This needs urgent investigation and it is likely to be getting hot either on top or inside the fusebox - if you can hear it, try to find out exactly where it is if if that individual fuse (which one, what does it protect?)
The faults (horn, dash etc) MAY be coming from either BCM (under the passenger glove box and/or PCM (under the passenger wheelarch)

You'll likely need to dry out and investigate that fuse, the fuse box, sort that out then see what faults remain.

However, I had a fault on the main cable going to the fusebox where it was getting hot enough to melt the plastic battery cover so worth looking there too.
These are just initial thoughts based on limited information so more info needed as you investigate?

Thank you for the suggestions I'll have a look at them. The grey fuse is the R6 or R5 I don't quite remember, when i took it off the fuse was quite warm to the touch too. I believe and hope that the fuse short circuited and only have to change that maybe. I've also took the fuse for the horn for now or else it would keep going off

Fuses either conduct or burn out, fizzing usually means a bad connection which gets hot and can burn out the connectors and, at worst cause a fire?

It shouldn't be hot unless something is taking a lot of current - what components are protected (see your handbook)

Oh and if it's "R" (anything) is it a relay rather than a fuse (there are grey and black ones in our fuse box about 2cm square etc.)?
Relays make a clicking sound during operation but shouldn't be clicking on and off rapidly.

On our model/year R6 controls heated windscreen (front?) and R5 is "fan" but doesn't say if it is cooling fan or interior one?
That's the best clues I have so far?

Managed to get it back up and running somehow. The battery was low and by jumping it started up. But now there are new problems, whenever I click the start button on the car, it gives us "engine malfunction" light. Then when we start the car it goes aways and then it says that all doors including the bonnet are opened when they aren't. And the locking isn't working either, on the drivers side if i push the lock button to lock all the doors they lock and then unlock immediately, and on the fob only the unlocking button is working the other two aren't (I've tried to change the batteries lol). Will say thank you for the help it was useful

If it's an obvious battery issue it is likely to cause no end of problems so test it properly (voltage, load test, capacity or a Halfords battery test) or just change it -if poor now will likely fail at the first cold spell. That needs to be ruled out as priority.

If EML is on, there should be an associated code (Forscan and lead)

What happened about the fizzing and your first big set of issues?

The EML doesn't turn on, the voltage on the battery we tested and it came out as 12 volts but once we managed to jump start it the battery came back up to 14 volts. The fizzing stopped not sure what it was or how it happened, it was very sunny today and very warm so hopefully any water left dried up already. Other than that I think it's just the battery that needs changing most likely. We ran Forscan too and there weren't any codes engine related.

We did find another issue. After a few hours when we got it running, we turned it back on and the throttle pedal wasn't working, just wasn't revving the car. It was previously but it just suddenly stopped.

I'm not sure what the problem is anymore lol, but i hope its just the battery

Hello, I am thinking if you still have drops of water in the connectors, switches..., I would take compresor and with air blow out water...

I remember long time agou with much simpler cars, when we were washing engine, we would cover with plastic main electric parts, like alternator, fuses...

throttle pedal wasn't working,

There should have been a code for that or live data would show it up.
As @SilviuSK says water is a likely problem and hope, once everything has dried out and battery checked and maybe changed, there won't be any issues?
Will you use a jet wash on the engine in future? 😉
