Can I re use the tyre sealant pump after use?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I recently had a puncture that I did a quick repair using the tyre sealant and pump provided with my Mk3 Ford Focus. Having now fixed the tyre, I want to ensure I have a fully working sealant kit for emergencies. I need to buy a new sealant bottle of course, but my question is do I also need to buy a whole new pump/compressor too? Will the hose have filled with sealant?

Any guidance on this would be appreciated!

Thanks

You are safe to re-use the air compressor, the sealant will not have entered the hose.

Just so you can feel confident why not use it to add some air to your other tyres ?

I've got a couple of these now which I can use as a tyre inflator.

Whether the compressor can be re-used fully depends on the design.

Many ford models are fitted with a Continental emergency kit that has a tyre sealant bottle that is directly screwed into the air inlet of the compressor. Once the orange plug is removed the bottle can be screwed into place.

On this design the tyre sealant is drawn into the intake of the compressor and pushed into the tyre through the hose. The complete compressor, pressure gauge and hose assembly will be contaminated with the tyre sealant as a result.

This type of compressor is designed for single use. Once the tyre sealant solidifies the compressor must be considered useless.

Wonderful clarity in that instruction label.  Just what you need in a stressful emergency situation!

It is possible to buy a new hose assembly for the Continental emergency kit. The only part that should get contaminated with gunk is from the orange cap to the end of the hose.

Example replacement hose: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Continental-Tire-17120760000-17120760000-Replacement-Hose/dp/B01N56MIHO

Sadly buying the hose and the sealant can be more expensive than buying a complete new compressor with new sealant. ☹️

I prefer to rely on this type (for nails/screws etc) - can be done on car:

Obviously won't fix slow punctures but you get plenty of warning with them.
Otherwise, tyre has to be replaced (can't be repaired after gunk has been used and never seen good reports on its effectiveness?)
Otherwise otherwise, call your breakdown service?

Thanks for all the feedback on this topic everyone! The repair kit in my Ford is the ConitMobilityKit, on the continental website it does show that the hose is designed to be replaceable so the whole compressor unit shouldnt be a single use item!

The hose I have has sealed up as a result of the sealant put through it, so at minimum the hose needs replacing

Seems replacing the hose recommended and a new sealant bottle appears to not be more expensive than buying a whole new kit

Thanks!

Tyre runs fine after using the seal kit. How long can I drive with this kind of tyre or I need to replace the tyre?

Says on the compressor. Max 120 miles at 50mph. Tyre should be checked and repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

Replace the tyre as soon as possible. The sealant is only intended to bring you home.

Cleaning up the sealant mess can be a challenge and is usually time consuming. Very few tyre fitters will actually repair a tyre properly after sealant has been used.

If the car has TPMS sensors, the TPMS valve and sensor should also be replaced after sealant has been used.

I'll stick with my plugging tool or call the breakdown service to take me to a tyre centre!
