Master/Slave cylinder issues

Featured Replies

Hi all, just reaching out to everyone for some advice.

I bought my car( ford focus 1.0 eco boost) back in November 2023 it had done 50,000 miles at the time and I am now on 70,000. Within 2 months of buying the car the slave cylinder went on the car but as it was still under warranty I managed to get it fixed foc from the dealership I bought it from. All was good until about a month ago (July 2025) where I broke down again with what felt like the same issue the clutch had no resistance and I could not get the clutch into any gears. I got towed to a garage and they said my slave cylinder had burst. When I then told them this is the second time it had happened they were shocked and rechecked the car and then told me the master cylinder had caused the slave cylinder to burst and subsequently the gear box, master and slave cylinder needed replacing. They went ahead and did the work. I got the car back last week and today was the first time I was using it since driving it home from the garage. Today the car didn’t feel right it was jittering, struggling to get into gear and I couldn’t stop stalling it in the short drive i did as the clutch was not acting right and it felt as if the car was being held back as if a handbrake was on. Subsequently after 10 minutes of driving I broke down again at a set of traffic lights trying to take off once the light had gone green. RAC came to tow me to the garage which was closed as it happened after work hours and he reckons the fluids have burst and it looks like the slave cylinder has gone AGAIN!.

Is this a common issue or is my car faulty?

Any advice on further actions I should take would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Isaac.

Yes.

Both master and slave cylinders do fail on these models, but usually only once.

I’d be seeing what the garage say in the morning - you’ve just paid them to fix this and it’s failed pretty much immediately it’s been driven

Thanks for you help, got the car back today apparently the O ring on the clutch line was slightly damaged and could therefore not withstand the pressure causing it to go again. Drove it today and feels perfect I hope this is the last of it now
