Eco Boost 1.0

Featured Replies

Looking for Fiesta 2013, are all the 1.0 eco boost or not.

Cant seem to find a clear answer.

Thanks

No.

There is a non-turbo version.  But they use the same basic engine, so still have wetbelts.

Yes, it's very confusing. When the facelifted Mk 7 (aka Mk 7.5) was introduced there were turbocharged 1.0 engines (Ecoboost) and a non-turbo version with 80ps (in effect, an Ecoboost without a turbo).

The older 1.25 4 cylinder engine also continued for some years in 60ps and 82ps versions and, if you are only looking for a lower powered car, this is a safer bet, with no wetbelts.

Anything 1.0 litre is an ecoboost.

Turbo or non turbo it has the wet belts

1.25cc and 1.6cc have dry belts

Don't know if this helps or just  muddies the waters further.

Someone kindly posted a link to a 2013 Fiesta brochure on here** a while back. In that, only the actual Ecoboost (100 and 125ps) is referred to as such. The non turbo is variously referred to as Duratec or simply 1.0 80ps. The 1.25 is described as Duratec and the 1.6 (by then on auto only) is Duratec Ti-VCT.

Ford certainly created a can of worms in more ways than one!

** Below, but link might have died by now.

Thanks for the replies. I am thinking the 1.0 L Duratec Ti-VCT is not a ecoboost?

"the Ford 1.0L Duratec Ti-VCT engine does not use a wet belt; instead, it features a timing chain. The Ti-VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) designation relates to the variable valve timing system, not the type of timing belt. Wet belts are found in the Ford EcoBoost engines, which are a different design from the Duratec Ti-VCT.

Not sure where that quote is from, but it is not correct. The 1.0 3 cylinder non-turbo is not an Ecoboost as such, as already said, but it is otherwise the same basic engine from the "Fox" family.

The pics below show the non-turbo and turbo (Ecoboost) versions. As you can see, they are virtually the same apart from the extra intake pipework and larger heatshield above the turbo on the Ecoboost (second image).

The 1.0 TI-VCT engine is not an EcoBoost engine. Ford introduced the EcoBoost name for its turbocharged, direct injected Petrol engines. The 1.0 TI-VCT engine does not have a turbocharger or direct fuel injection. The 1.0 TI-VCT engine is a naturally aspirated engine with port fuel injection.

The European 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.0 TI-VCT engines in the Fiesta MK7.5 however do both belong to the Fox engine family.

Both the 100 / 125 / 140 HP 1.0 EcoBoost and the 65 / 80 HP 1.0 TI-VCT Fox engines do have a main wetbelt between the crankshaft and camshafts and a smaller wetbelt between the crankshaft and the oil pump (and balance shaft on the automatic transmission versions).

In fact, the exact same parts catalog covers both the 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.0 TI-VCT engines.

The later 1.1 TI-VCT that is used in the Fiesta MK8 is basically a further development of the 1.0 TI-VCT Fox Engine. The 1.1 TI-VCT also belongs to the Fox engine family. and has the same wetbelt setup

The 1.2 TI-VCT that is used in the Ka+ however is a different engine. The 1.2 TI-VCT is actually a reduced displacement version of the 1.5 TI-VCT Dragon engine. The Dragon TI-VCT engines do use a wetbelt setup similar to the 1.0 Fox engines. The 1.5 ECOboost Dragon engine however does have a timing chain and a gear driven oil pump (early versions) or wetbelt driven oil pump later versions.

1.0 TI-VCT Fox = Naturally aspirated with port fuel injection. Timing = 2x wetbelt.
1.0 ECOboost Fox = Turbocharged with direct fuel injection. Timing = 2x wetbelt.
1.1 TI-VCT Fox = Naturally aspirated with port fuel injection. Timing = 2x wetbelt.

1.2 TI-VCT Dragon = Naturally aspirated with port fuel injection. Timing = 2x wetbelt.
1.5 TI-VCT Dragon = Naturally aspirated with port fuel injection. Timing = 2x wetbelt.
1.5 ECOboost Dragon = Turbocharged with direct fuel injection. Timing = 1x chain and 1x gear drive (early examples) or 1x chain and 1x wetbelt (later examples).

OK, so it's not an Ecoboost.

But it's still an Ecoboom!

Great summary, there, Wilco😀

Changing the topic slightly, we've had a few queries about the Ka + which is quite a rare beast in the UK at least.

We'd figured out that the 3 cylinder engine in the later facelift cars was wet belt from various used engines for sale on Ebay etc, but (I at least) hadn't seen confirmation that it was a version of  the Dragon, though I knew of the n/a 1.5 wet belt version of that engine.

Every day's a schoolday, as we often say!😀

A few Years ago I had the pleasure to drive a Fiesta MK7.5 with the 1.0 TI-VCT engine as a courtesy car while my parents Focus MK3 1.6 ECOboost was at the dealership to repair severe hail damage. During that period I drove both the 65 HP and 80 HP versions.

Compared to a 1.0 ECOboost both the 65 and 80 HP TI-VCT versions felt completely gutless. In my opinion the 65 HP version is severely underpowered. The 80 HP version is a bit better but still felt sluggish.

The 1.0 EcoBoost suits the Fiesta MK7.5 much better.

The 1.0 TI-VCT does not make much sense. It is just a lot of Eco without any Boost and because the 1.0 TI-VCT also has the wetbelt setup it is just as unreliable as the 1.0 EcoBoost.
