Power loss

Featured Replies

Hi. My 2013 s max titanium x sport petrol has lost power. Drives fine but with no real acceleration! I had it plugged in and it gave me 2 fault codes P006A-64 and P132B-21. I know the 1st relates to the MAP sensor so I replaced but made no difference. It was driving fine then on the motorway I heard a slight whine that got louder as I accelerated. This noise then stopped and the car lacked power. Any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

With those codes and the noise you describe the turbo could have failed.  Unfortunately it's behind the engine on these so not easy to access, but I would want to remove the intake pipe to check the impeller and shaft personally.

If you want to just try another random part then the boost solenoid would be the one to try.  Also check the vacuum pipes are all intact to & from it.

I will try to get under the car at some point and check but If it is the turbo is it a massively expensive job

Depends what you call massively expensive I guess, but you should be able to fit a good used one for less than £500.  New or refurbed would me more like £1000.

Any idea where the boost solenoid is on this model

On the turbo itself, small black plastic rectangle.  Just follow the vac pipe back from the vacuum actuator.

I’ve had a quote for a boost control solenoid that was diagnosed by a Ford mechanic. He’s saying £355 for the part genuine Ford and £100 labour! Part sound mega expensive to me. And ideas??

That sounds about right for 1.0 EcoBoost.  From Ford you can only buy the full assembly including the solenoid, brackets and vacuum pipework altogether for those.  I think your engine is 2.0 EcoBoost though?  I haven't been able to find the solenoid on the parts catalogues for this engine.  Don't suppose they gave you the part number as that would make the search easier?

The solenoids can be bought individually from aftermarket suppliers, but you need to get the exact part number from it to find a compatible one.  (Or take a used one from an identical car at a scrap yard).

*Edit:

I have found this set for the 2.0 EcoBoost in 2013 Focus ST.  I don't know whether it's exactly the same wastegate setup in the S-Max, but it is still expensive as you can see.  (They've also titled it wrong on this advert, it should be EcoBoost, not EcoBlue.  EcoBlue didn't even exist in 2012).

This picture may help you locate the one on your car.  The black plastic box with writing on is the solenoid itself.

I spoke to Ford and they had 1 on the shelf £277 inc vat. Can get aftermarket one for £80 which says it’s compatible with my car from putting in the registration. The fellow originally quoted me £290 for The part Plus £100 to fit on a voice message but then when the quote came through put the part up to £355, hence why I checked with Ford.
