I bought a similar Exide battery nearly 4 years ago.  Sat in a car boot for 3 years.  Fitted this year and still going well.  So my personal experience is that Exide make a decent battery.

Brilliant. I hope I'm as lucky!🙏

Hi all

Having never bought a new battery before, will it need charging before use?

Yes, you need to charge it with a Smart charger (like the Maypole) for at least 12 hours before your fit it.

Once installed remember to reset the BMS.

How do I reset the BMS?

CAUTION: The reference at the beginning of the video saying that the BMS should be reset after charging the battery in incorrect.

The Battery Monitoring System (BMS) should only be reset if a new battery has been fitted.

Will this be OK?

This is the normal recommended Maypole Smart charger that is used by many here:

No.  Not since 1987.

Really depends on how long it's been in storage.  Batteries are charged at the factory.  But could have lost charge while sitting in a warehouse.  I did recharge mine before fitting, albeit 3 years after delivery.

It is still best practice to fully charge them first, so the BMS gets the best possible SOC reading when reset.

If the battery charge is less than 100% when fitted and the BMS is reset, then it will calculate the SOC from what ever charge level the battery is at.

On vehicles without BMS and without Smart charging then a new battery that is not fully charged will work just fine and over next few days the cars charging system will 'top up' the battery charge level.

Vehicles fitted with BMS and with smart charging then the battery will only get charged to 80% of it's capacity (factory set).

Hi all

Battery arrived yesterday so put it on charge for around 10hrs then for another 2/3 hrs this morning. Connected it up reset the BMS and all seems well. Even the start/stop system is working! So thanks to everyone that contributed to the thread it was very much appreciated.

Thanks

Dicko

Don't worry, there is a button which allows you to switch that off. 🙂

Good to know the BMS reset was successful, so sorry to hear that the S/S system has decided to work but not to worry they usually quit in a few months 🤣

I think I only used it for a couple of weeks when I first got the car and then decided to switch it off. When I reconnected the battery I forgot to switch the s/s off so it was a bit of a shock when I pulled up at the lights and it cut out!🤣

Regarding the BMS, when I reset it the battery light stayed on so was sat their with head in hands thinking I'd just wasted £72 on a battery I didn't need and it was some other issue. A couple of mins later it went out.
