knocking changing gears

Featured Replies

bear with me as im posting here as a last resort.

2.0tdci 2009 manual

every time i change gear, i get a "bang bang" from the gearbox area. it bangs on moving the gear stick, not the clutch. its VERY loud, getting worse. happens when still and moving. the gearbox and clutch etc is flawless, no issues ever.

i have replaced top and bottom gearbox/engine mounts. driveshafts also (mot fail) still noise.

its had replacement oil. still noise

if i move the selector on top of the box by hand, same noise.

i can get a video tomorrow

is this a part that has bushes? can it be lubed? its embarrasing lol

ill take anything at this point........................lol

Is it movement of the engine gearbox causing something to hit the bodywork?
OR an internal knock/clonk from something inside?
That's the first thing to really bottom out.
How do you get the noise when you move the selector by hand (engine must be running?) but unsure how that is possible or would cause a noise - the clutch must be pressed in by another person - just trying to understand?)
What about the mounting that prevents the power unit rotating, the one at the rear of the gearbox - has that been inspected, replaced?
I'd put it up on ramps, generate the noise and look for external stuff to narrow it down first but I can't think how such a loud noise could be internal and still unsure what exact circumstances are - could it be something broken in clutch plate, pressure plate or even flywheel?
Well, you did say you'd accept anything...

nope i can replicate the noise by moving the selector on the box from inside the engine bay, with no clutch input. got the mrs to move it inside car while i was under the car and nothing moved 😞

happens with or without engine running! clutch not needed when engine off

yes - brand new part 🙂

starting to worry it's internal (gearbox/flywheel) in which case, it's getting left alone LOL

As it happens without engine running and is very loud I don't understand how that happens as you only moving linkage (unless there's a joint that is causing it)

If you do that whilst on ramps or jack (with axle stands for safety) and perhaps use screwdriver on ear to try to locate exact source then that's my next suggestion.
It is beginning to sound clutch/flywheel but still don't understand how that is possible - very strange at long distance so hope someone has experience of this?
