Help needed with 54 plate Galaxy

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

i have a Ford Galaxy 2.3 petrol 54 Plate and whilst driving last Friday I noticed a loud noise just like a blown exhaust sounds,so took it to nearest garage and they said exhaust is ok it looks like it’s the injectors,Went to another garage and they say the same

On Monday I checked Under the bonnet and removed spark plug cover and noticed one plug was actually out! I tried putting it back in but not ***** tight so think the thread has gone on head.been told can be rethreaded or new Head. It’s been a good car so would like it repaired, how much roughly do you think it would cost and can other damage be caused by the loose plug?

thanks

If this is an aluminum head then it can be repaired quickly & cheaply using a helicoil.  I wouldn't expect to pay any more than an hours labour.

It doesn't always work, but is worth trying in the first instance.

If it needs a new head then you'd probably be looking nearer £1000, and I don't know how easy it would be to source for this engine.  You may even find a complete used engine is cheaper and easier to find.

Thank you Tom,Do you think anymore damage could have been caused?

The only potential damage would have been bore wash from unburnt petrol running down the cylinder walls and past the piston rings, but it sounds like it wasn't completely misfiring and wasn't driven very far in this condition, so is most likely fine.  You could have a compression test done to confirm, though will need the spark plug threads to be fixed first to attach the tester.
