Ford focus 2018 1.0L ecoboost fault

Featured Replies

Had for 1 year now sitting at 94k miles, which have all virtually been on motorway. Went for short drive parked, started car and runs very rough with struggling to rev when parked. Let car cool for a bit then tried to drive got about 5 minutes then tried to hill start, car just had no power when I tried to pull off and ended up stalling . Got AA out, readings showing fuel valve pressure high and fuel valve pressure low at some time ( so might be to do with sensor?). When car is cooled it revs better however on drive back struggled especially on hills and sometimes began to cut out and stall despite travelling 40mph. Any ideas what this could be and has anyone had similar issues? Car has never failed MOT and mostly serviced by Ford also before buying the owner had the coil pack changed and said it had issues with misfires.

You need the Ford specific DTC's read using FORScan.

Is this a Focus Mk3.5 or the later Mk4 ?

Thanks for the reply, I have a Bluetooth OBD2 vgate reader which from my research is compatible with Forscan, It is a mk3.5.

The symptoms and description of the DTC code do both point in the direction of the high-pressure fuel pump.

The mechanical (cam driven) high-pressure fuel pump has an integrated electronic fuel metering valve that controls the amount of fuel that the pump outputs to keep the fuel pressure steady.

The high-pressure fuel pump can basically develop 2 different faults:

1: Being a mechanical pump it is subjected to wear. It is being driven at 1.5 times the engine speed so mechanical failure of the pump is not uncommon.
2: The electronic fuel metering valve inside the pump can fail. Being fully integrated the complete high-pressure fuel pump needs to be replaced.

In both cases the pump will not output enough fuel for the engine to run properly.

The full DTC code however should confirm or exclude the high-pressure fuel pump as the cause of the problem.

Came back as saying my fuel rail pressure at idle was 41psi which seems low,  with the P0087 error code logged, also does anyone know if my model has a fuel filter, from my research I don’t know if it has

mk3.5 125hp 1.0l ecoboost 2018

It has a fuel filter in/next to the fuel tank.

There is no regular service for that.

There was for older models but for this there isn't.

Also it is possible this error code is about the high pressure fuel pump.

I have the same model (2017) and the mechanic cleaned it although it didn't have issue.

Maybe someone with more knowledge could assist you here.

Plus the fuel filter has to be changed along with the fuel pump.

It is not the cheapest thing.

Ok thanks for the reply, I’m looking to do the pump and sensors myself but I will now look into the fuel filter aswell

There is no replaceable fuel filter.

It is just a large mesh strainer to prevent the low-pressure fuel pump from sucking in large particles. It is part of the low-pressure fuel pump and is not considered to be a serviceable item.

Checking or replacing the strainer requires the fuel tank to be removed from the car.

This design was introduced on the Focus MK2 back in 2004 and since then has been used on all Petrol engines. Within the last 20 Years I have not seen or heard the strainer becoming clogged.

I have a ford zetec auto 2019. I bought it in 2022 . Whilst in France on holiday the oil engine pressure low light came on and we drove it to a Ford garage. After a diagnostic test I was told it needed a 6-8000 euros repair! I have had the car regularly serviced and now have to go to `France to tow it home as Green Flag wouldnt bring it back as they said I could have it fixed there. I am understandably devastated. I wrote to Ford who said "Bad Luck" I believe this is a recognised fault with these wet belt engines. Looking for advice PLEASE!

Zetec is a trim level not a model.

What mileage has your FOCUS covered ?   What engine has it got ?

Has the car always been serviced on time and by a Ford dealer ?

Zetec Auto what?

And what engine?

Focus zetec auto. 999c cylinders

nit sure if this is the info you need.

My focus has 51000 miles on the clock and has been regularly serviced

As long as it's been serviced to the Ford schedule they might offer you some goodwill towards the cost.

But they won't pay the full amount and they won't pay for the recovery back from France.

Yes I’ve seen this letter and am bringing the car back next week and taking it to a garage near Whitby so will write again to Ford

I assume you are a MK4 Focus with the 8 speed auto.

That will be the oil pump drive wet belt that has gone down, looks like this is going to be a common problem on these engines.

As you continued to drive once the low oil pressure light came on then I'm afraid the engine is scrap.

I take it you have no warranty?

Ask Ford to show you full service history.

If you purchased it with finance you could try rejecting the car back to the finance company

Other than that either shell out for a brand new engine, with warranty and change the oil for the correct oil very, very often and DO NOT use Stop/Start then make sure you change the oil pump belt every 3 years to be safe

Or

Source and fit a known running, you've seen it yourself, automatic engine (it must be automatic), and change the oil pump belt before you fit it then follow the advice above.

This is a known issue on the automatic engines, that have a balancer shaft that is tearing through the oil pump drive belt and that Ford are not admitting to.

Remember in future, if ever you see the low oil pressure warning light even flicker, SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN immediately and do not attempt to start it until you have fully investigated why it has come on

If you can get your Ford dealer to contact Ford, that will have more impact than you doing it privately.

Also not sure if you mean it's going to an independent garage?  This goodwill scheme only applies to repairs done by Ford dealerships.

This is for the original "dual" wet belt 1.0 engines, if you have that (which is why we were asking "what car "what engine")

Oh.  I didn't notice they'd posted on an old thread.  Definitely no chance of goodwill if it's a chain engine.

Whitby North Yorkshire ?

Just your profile says Co-Down NI. If you're not taking it home then you would be better to have it recovered to PumaSpeed. I'm sure they would be able to source and fit an engine at a very competitive price.

PumaSpeed

178 Batley Road
Alverthorpe
Wakefield
WF2 0AJ

All a bit of a mystery without knowing exactly what/where the car is.

If its a 2019 Focus we're talking chain cam/wet belt oil pump and I've not seen Pumaspeed offer any 1.0 other than the original wet belt cam drive version. Don't think I've seen a chain cam 1.0 on offer anywhere yet, come to think of it.
