Power shift woes

Featured Replies

Hello.

I have a 2011 galaxy .. I absolutely love this thing. It’s a top spec titanium x with some lovely features and lots of space.

But there’s is a couple of problems

It’s a power shift! It’s done 164k miles but overall it drives so well, considering. Basically it has some symptoms and I just would like to know if it’s “just a feature of power shifts” or if it points towards the solenoids, the clutch, the electronics.

1. When the car is cold the gear change is impeccable! It drives up and down gears so smoothly. But when it’s warm, it downshifts harder (mainly from 3-2 or 2-1)

2. When coasting at about 30mph, the rev range is about 1500rpms the car lurches ever so slightly, to some people it feels like a gentle back and forth rock.

3. When the car is warm and your waiting in traffic in first gear if you let off the brake too quickly it like jumps out of drives for a second then goes back in fine. Is this a sticking solenoid? Clutch pack?

First question,

when was the gearbox last fully serviced ?

...and the old filter inspected (plus any Forscan fault codes in the TCM but we may be getting ahead of ourselves...?)

Hey .. so it was last serviced in June this year, about 1500 miles back. It had a fresh oil and filter change. I do however hear there is a bigger internal filter too?

I have forscan guys yes, and I’ve read the TCM and it comes back with no problems.

Just checking we are specifically talking about the gearbox service and not the engine service ? 🤔

And, yes there is a larger internal filter that needs quite a lot of work to get at but if the external filter is examined it can give some clues i.e. contamination with plastic bits, lots of dirt etc?
I'll ask my usual question that may or not be in any way relevant ... is the change the same when you keep it in manual mode?

It's certainly not a feature in ours  - changes are always smooth so your comments make me ask how long you have owned it, the gearbox oil change history (it should have had at least FIVE changes using the 30 000 miles rule) etc

Yes, gearbox service was June this year. There wasn't any bits of plastic afaik, but the oil was a dark browny colour so was due a change for sure. Ok so in manual mode, it performs the same yeah.

That tells me it was LONG overdue unless you mean something like this (both with phone light):PowershiftOil2024.thumb.jpg.4214591ba295a37d300c1af287a7bea2.jpgPowershiftOil2025.thumb.jpg.4c665e5a3959e778624a844018c86edc.jpg
2 yo on left, 3 yo on right.
Don't know what else to suggest other than leave it, be gentle, see how it develops including monitoring for codes and solenoid current values etc.  and maybe change oil again either next year but certainly not leave it for 3 years?
My gut feeling is that if oil change has been ignored (you haven't given any ownership or service history) the friction properties of the clutch plates may have been damaged but that's a total guess which others will pick up on!!
