Engine Overtemperature and limp mode help

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have started having the car go into limp mode randomly with the yellow spanner on the dash board and also an engine overtemperature warning. This can be reset by turning the car off and again, sometimes working first time or maybe after a few times.

I've checked the coolant level and its full. No leaks are visible. The gauge on the dash has barely moved and hasn't got up to normal temperature yet. No smoke/steam but general running does seem a little off when the light is cleared.

I have read the codes on FORScan and they are as below:

  • TCM - U0401:00-27
  • PCM - P2560:00-AF
  • HVAC - U0401:00-0A
  • PSCM - C1B00:49-0A
  • IPC - U0401:00-8A

I have had the gauge tested and it works with incremental increases from a diagnostics tool.

I notice these are communication errors, could it be a ECM failing?

Thanks!

The Focus Mk4 2.0 EcoBlue has 2 coolant reservoirs. Have you checked them both ?

The intake air charge cooler( intercooler) has its own cooling system independent from the main engine cooling system. Has its own radiator and electric coolant pump.

Now that I did not know! I best have another look tomorrow then. Roughly any idea where in the engine bay it is located?

Thank you for that! Ill be checking that first thing. Is it the same grade coolant as the main reservoir I need to top it up?

Yes, exactly the same.

So I've just checked the level of the second tank and that is full as well unfortunately.

Is the coolant level measured in the tank do you know? Or is it linked to a flow when running?

FORScan should be able to tell you Live Temperatures for the Coolant, Cylinder Head (if that Engine has a Sensor for that) and Oil.

They should all be within a few degrees of each other at all times from stone cold to full temperature.

Use the Search Function in FORScan for Temperature under the PCM.

This is beginning to sound like you have a faulty sensor rather than a genuine 'over heat' problem.

I think you may by correct, I've been thinking that all along.

I did run a live test yesterday and the coolant temperature and oil temperature are 1 degree different. It was sitting at 46C.

I've got vague memories of seeing this fault code when the intercooler pump failed.  There isn't a specific code for the electric coolant pumps as far as I remember.

If you unplug the pump as a test, that should trigger the dash warning if this is correct.

I’ll give this a go tonight when I’m home from work and see if the same message appears, thanks! Just have to figure out where it is.. 😆

Is this pump easily accessible? I’ve unplugged what I thought was the connection but just the normal engine light came on, not the over temperature alarm that I’ve been getting.

This was resolved by Ford in the end. It was a damaged wiring loom which had been routed incorrectly after previous work and 2 wires were damaged from rubbing on a hose clip.
