Rear/auxiliary heater leak?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I recently purchased a 2012 Galaxy 1.6 EcoBoost. Not long afterwards I noticed a faint wet carpet type smell, but couldn't find any damp carpet in the cabin, so replaced the cabin filter in case it was just that. Fast forward a couple of weeks, I was poking around in the boot when I discovered wet carpet! It is right in the centre of the boot area, not where you would expect if it were rain water getting in, and there is nothing dripping from the roof.

I took the carpet up and to my surprise, where I expected a spare wheel, is actually a heater/blower/air con unit. I'm no expert, but it says 'aux' on the label so I imagine this is an auxiliary climate control unit for the rear of the car? The damp carpet is pretty much directly above and in front of the unit, and it feels sort of oily to the touch, rather than straight water. I've noticed the car has very slowly been drinking coolant, but it had the coolant system recall done just before I purchased it, so I thought it was probably just 'burping'.

Are these rear units known to leak? I'm hoping it's just a rubber seal or something, but thought I'd check whether there are any hidden gotchas before I go dismantling stuff.

Attached is a photo of the unit I am referring to (not the one in my car, 'er indoors is out shopping in it at the minute).

I've never known of one to leak. Sorry can't offer much help on this, but here is a link to the parts catalogue:
