Troubleshooting help needed 2008 3.5L V6

November 23:

08 Lincoln MKZ 3.5 V6 2WD (Fancy Fusion) 180k

Great car, bought in Utah on a trip. Rust free, drove 4k around the country,  back to Michigan 3 years ago. Used as a gas saver daily to work, the morning it went bad.

55 mph ½ way to work, she starts to misfire a bit, like it dropped a cylinder or two. Ok, i hadn't done a tune up since owning it, so maybe it's overdue? I pull over, check wires, all looks good, might as well get to work. I hit autozone for a code read coming home, coil pack 1 & 2. Not surprising. I get a phone call as I leave, I sit there maybe 5 minutes finishing the call and the car died. Dang. It wouldn't start after that. That was this May. I've been so busy, I'm now getting to troubleshoot it. A mechanic did look at it, but all he did was kill the battery, not finding anything. I replaced it and the key fob battery. The old battery was so bad the Ford security red lock light wouldn't go away. All fuses look good. Does anyone have a fuel pump and igniter schematic for starters?

November 28: Update

Just thoughts and ponders. (Someone on another site told me the timing belt slipped) This is a chain and gear set up. Is it still just as likely to slip? There was no catastrophic sounds (metal on metal, clanking, etc) or smoke when the problem started, thank goodness.

I've done a poorman's spark check on the no.5 coil and plug, by grounding the ground electrode. There's too much plastic, I have to run wire with an aligator clip on each end to the electrode and a good strut nut for ground. NO SPARK. I need to check the whole front bank.

Fuel: I borrowed the psi kit from autozone, still haven't the slightest where to hook it up yet. Mind you, I'm doing what I can in between holiday crap. I got under the front rt passenger foot compartment, verified the inertia switch is closed. I wasn't sure i was hearing the main fuel tank fuel pump, as opposed to the direct injection fuel pump for the fuel rails. So I disconnected the fuel line that goes to the U - shape rail that goes to said injectors. With key to ON I get a good 1 shot of fuel, then with key to start, it'll pump as long as i hold it, so that's good.

That fuel line, runs down the firewall as well as anything with the backside bank, i can't see crap because of the intake being molded over that way. The fuel pressure switch is probably down there. Luckily the car is on a lift and i just got to lift it when im done messing around up top for a bit.

Anyone know a better way to check for spark and injector readings?

Can't say ***** around? Lol

Hi Jake, this the UK Ford Owners Club. I know it no longer makes that clear since the home page was changed, but we only have knowledge of UK and some European models.

To confuse things further what we call a Ford Fusion is not what you know as a Fusion.

Hahaha ha 😆 well then, Ford confusion it is then! Thank you unofix. I do see the newer body style, gen 3, of my fusion, like Fred Fusion. What model is that? Do they have the 3.5L V6 over there? Quite a big motor compared to most, I would suspect.

We only have Kuga (Escape in USA) and Puma, which you don't have. over here.

All the rest are vile BEV rubbish, two of which are basically rebadged Skodas and absolutely vile, whilst one is the Mustang Mach-E, which is just awful, not vile.

We do have RHD Mustangs but I don't think anyone buys many, they're way too overpriced.

Ford have committed commercial suicide over here

Ford Mondeo is like your Lincon Mkz / Fusion.

The biggest engine would be the 2.0 4 cylinder which is very often diesel !!!

Depends how far back you go I guess.

Mk3 Mondeo did get 2.5 & 3.0 V6 petrols.

Mk4 Mondeo got the 2.5 turbo petrol (5 cylinder).

That was back in the days when dinosaurs were still roaming the earth 🤣
