Car won't start

Featured Replies

Good evening all

My partner recently passed her driving test and purchased herself a 2009 Fiesta 4 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago she took a drive to her friends and upon leaving, it wouldn't start on the first few turns of the key but did eventually start. She returned home and I took a look at it, it wouldn't start once again and the PATS red light was flashing rapidly, I changed the FOB battery to no avail. I checked the car battery and it was almost dead so we bought a new one and it seemed to cure the issue for the next week.

The following week we were going out for a drive and it wouldn't start and the PATS light was flashing. She'd driven it to work all week but it had been sat for 2 days. I checked the battery again, it was a bit low which I figured was because we'd tried to start it a few times, so I charged it. The car still wouldn't start with a fully charged battery.

She has 2 keys, one with buttons, one without. I've downloaded ForScan, purchased a VGate VLinker FS cable and plugged it in today to check the if the keys are the problem. They were both registered on the PATS system, but upon looking at the DTC's I could see code B10D7:87-2F which I'm aware means the key is not programmable. I attempted to programme the keys to the car following the instructions on the ForScan page, to no avail.

I've been in touch with a mobile locksmith who's going to come during the week and cut 2 new keys.

I've also been in touch with the individual who sold us the car. Although it was sold as seen, and the warranty doesn't cover electrical faults, I'm hopeful0 they may offer to help with the cost of 2 new keys. It may be wishful thinking. 😏

We also had code C0034 for the right front wheel speed sensor which I will have to get looked at once the key issue is sorted. I'm wondering if this is why the battery was low after a couple days of being sat.

My query is, how could it have been that the car started fine for the first couple of weeks of ownership? And then all of a sudden stops working?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Well that will be expensive and a complete waste of time. You would be better to spend your money on getting an Auto Electrician to take a look and do some diagnostics.

It was very fortunate that it failed, otherwise you could have turned the car in to a brick. It is the car that gets programmed to recognise the keys, not the other way around.

On your 2009 Fiesta it might be the instrument cluster infamous problem. @rd457 would know if that is likely to be the case.

It is very much already a brick, as neither key starts the car whatsoever.

OK, give this a try. With the palm of your hand give the top of the dashboard a couple of good thumps just above where the instrument cluster is.

See if the behaviour of the flashing PATS security light changes. Check if the car will start.

Turns out its the ignition ring. But I cant find a replacement part beginning with 8A6T. Any ideas @unofix?

I would need the full part number, or the VIN of your car. They shouldn't be too hard to get hold of.

8A6T is common to most parts of your Fiesta, it just means it is for a Fiesta Mk7

It is very likely to be 8A6T-15607-AB but you need to check.

Yeah that's what I've got, can't find any in stock anywhere though 🤦

Not on a Fiesta, they don't suffer from it.
