Ignition Switch Replacement

Featured Replies

Morning. I am 99% certain that my ignition switch needs replacing on my 2008 diesel Fusion. If I move the key just a fraction from the on position the dash just goes blank. It seems to be getting worse rapidly - car runs perfectly but then sometimes when you start it, it just immediately dies.

My question is simply whether the iginition switch can simply be replaced. The Haynes manual suggests that it is relatively straight forward, but I can't work out whether the keys will then need coding to match the ignition. I have Googled around and seems to get conflicting results!

Obviously I don't want to change the ignition switch and then be unable to move the car!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

PS I thought that it might be the key or the chip to start with but it does exactly the same with both keys.

The ignition switch is just that, it's a simple switch fastened to the back of the mechanical key barrel. There will be a separate plastic aerial collar around the barrel that picks up the transponder that is in the key, Just be careful not to break the wires or the connector.

There is no coding of any type required when just replacing the ignition switch.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply. I have removed the old one and it is looking very corroded. Mr Amazon is bringing a £16 replacement tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
