Engine swap questions

Featured Replies

Good morning. About to start engine swap after a blew up. I got a spare engine which supposedly have no compression, it turns freely with all pistons in place. But noticed as the flywheel is removed that if you tilt the engine, oil comes through the flywheel bolt holes, is that normal?

Thanks

Why would you buy an engine with no compression?

Yes I bet it does turn freely 🤣🤣

should this not fall into the category of "for entertainment purposes only" ? 😂

I've heard it all now

Mostly because I paid 200 pound for it instead the 2 grand they are asking for others, just a bet, engine came with turbo, alternator coils and everything, so even if it don't work, money can be recovered. Now I asked a simple question, nobody knows? It's just curiosity as I will open the engine as soon as I fit  the flywheel for what I have to take the other engine out( have to do it anyway as it have a nice hole behind the cat)

No compression may be just a headgasket, end of the day isn't the end of the world if something else, I borescoped the cylinders and nothing untoward there, signs of water ingress, which is a good sign as long as it isn't a crack on the head

firstly, it would help if we knew which engine?

i can only assume by your vehicle in the profile and the fact the original went boom, that its a 1.0 ecoboost?

if so, these engines have so little tolerance for skimming and replacing the head gaskets. not to mention bent valves and broken rocker arms that will most likely be the cause of the loss of compression.

Id personally just part out that engine you got and get another.  you can get recon ones for about £1k depending on where you shop.

to answer the flywheel bolt question, yes oil comes out the holes, the bolts must be refitted with loctite to avoid leaking.

Well, got the other engine out today oil came from the front bolt in the new engine too, but no oil on the front or rear bolts on the original engine. So far so good, getting a robe bit tomorrow to take the head out and find what's the surprise. Hope you are right and the thing of the oil is ok.

Belt complete no tooth missing no crap on the oil at all, so valves likely ok, headgasket or crack on the head, will know tomorrow.

Well, there wasn't engines for 1k when I was looking, 1.4k and still you have to open check them and at least change the seals and the belts so will see tomorrow how it looks

1.0 ecoboost, as far as I can see there isn't any rocker arms...

My money is on a crack in the head.

Good luck though.  Sounds like it will be a bargain if it's just the headgasket.

Hi, head out and looked well no cracks and all signs of a deformed head, it might go well with the surface and new bolts will find out soon

The only thing which baffled me is the head bolts. Thought they were ribe 10, got a draper set, didn't fit. Ended taking the head with a 50 torx, anyway changing the bolts so no problem,.but, what bit should I get for assembling?

I see the bolts, but no confirmation of the tool for them, should be ribe M10? Maybe M9?

Focus 1.0 EcoBoost head bolts are specific M10x1.5, 105mm long, female spline (Ribe) bolts

Yes it's M10, needs to be a decent quality.

I wonder if this engine has already been apart once before and had cheap aftermarket head bolts fitted?  Draper aren't exactly high quality, but I would still expect them to be within tolerance at this sort of size.

Maybe, will see, I ordered reinz bolts, expect to be good enough, will see if the draper bit fit on them or I will have to send them back

Well, head is back but the guy said he had to give it a proper skim. Any chance anyone will know if there is oversized headgaskets for them?

140ps Fiesta has a thicker head gasket, I understand.

Ford only list two headgaskets.  One for the 140ps version.  The other for all other versions.

They don't list the thickness of either unfortunately.  They don't list any thicker repair gaskets either.

Last time a machine shop gave a head a 'proper skim' for me, they took too much off and ruined it.
