But also you need to make sure it it HAS been serviced and maintained

That's the problem.

There's plenty of other cars out there. Does it HAVE to be an S-Max?

Welcome!
Agree totally with service and get a decent warranty from dealer!)

What do you mean, there isn't anything that comes close for space, step in rather than down or up, 5 full seats, 7 occasionally, large boot, massive loadspace when seat folded, ability to tow 1500 kg caravan all over Europe, best handling MPV, ever!
What are the realistic alternatives (not SUV)?
Sorry, I need to go for a lie down now, got over-excited!😉

I agree the S-Max was rather special driving wise, though not everyone would be bothered by that aspect I suppose. Might be useful to start from zero base and define exactly what is required here?

E.g. 5/7 seats, amount of luggage space, engine size/type, auto/manual, towing ability, higher seat position or not, etc.

Faux SUV type cars do seem to have stepped into this market slot recently, but many people do seem to like the higher seat position. Skoda Kodiak for example seems very popular with families round my way.

Can't recall exactly when VW dropped the Sharan but that was a similar vehicle to the S-Max/Galaxy** and the Touran was a bit smaller but still 7 seat. (** The early version was the same vehicle as the Galaxy iirc.) SEAT Alhambra is virtually the same car as Sharan.

I do agree there aren't many MPVs nowadays.  Aside from the S-Max it's probably just the VW Touran and Citroen C4 (plus rebadges).

I'm seeing a lot of Dacia Joggers around my way now, nearly new can be had for the same price as an 8 year old S-Max!  I doubt it'll handle as well, if that's important to you, but reliability, running costs, safety features etc are all likely to be better.  Interior quality is considerably better than it was just a few years ago as well.  I'd say it's certainly worth a look and a test drive unless handling is the main criteria.

And from the parent of Dacia the Renault Grand Scenic can also be found:

https://www.carwow.co.uk/renault/grand-scenic

Most of the stuff here we've already mentioned, it really depends on th OPs actual requirements:

https://www.carwow.co.uk/mpvs/used

There's even the spacious and VERY practical Berlingo and its ilk although there are compromises around the 7 seat versions (you have to remove whole seats rather than the FFFS -  Ford Fold Flat System as in S-Max) and Tourneo Connect.
Beware of wet belts and their full service records?
Dacia don't seem to get good Euro NCAP results (check crash tests) but IIRC they don't fit all the unnecessary (?) bells and whistles that appear to be demanded (like Blind spot systems etc etc etc)?

As said, really need to know what the requirements are but if you want one, you want it (and we still do!)
