Ford Focus MK4 St Line - Auto stop/start transmission issue

Featured Replies

Hi. So my focus had a new engine 18 moths ago on warranty. I'd say about 6 months after I started getting hill start warnings, the auto stop/start malfunction warnings and on occasion the rotary shifter will just keep rotating on its on back to park when initially trying to move off or almost always when using reverse to manoeuvre. Weirdly, in sports mode, everything works perfectly 8 times out of 10

I've taken it to a garage and they said there's nothing wrong with the actual mechanics of the car. But they did do a diagnostic test and it said something about no signal from the TCM (Transmission control module). They said I'd have to take it to a ford garage to get this sorted which would probably cost a lot of money.

That was a few months ago and I just can't afford it right now. So my question is; Does anyone know how much this would cost to fix or if there's an easy fix I can do myself?

I’ve attached the actual diagnostic report

Sorry, it’s the auto hold malfunction warning message as well as ‘transmission not in park’ which I get while driving. There’s also a hill start warning.

These issues are often caused by the vehicle battery having a very low State Of Charge (SOC).

Do you have a multimeter ?

You need to measure the battery terminal voltage approximately 1 hour after you park and compare it against the table below.

It would do no harm to give the battery a minimum 12 hour charge no matter what reading you get.

As @unofix says, check battery voltage performance.

You're due a battery now, if it hasn't already had one.

If you do fit a new battery, fit a higher capacity one, full charge it before fitting and reset the BMS.

If that doesn't work, early MK4s had lots of software glitches.

I would recommend booking onto Ford and having the software updated on the PCM, TCM, BCM, IPC, GSM, ABS and IPMA.

That will cover everything your car is moaning about

While you are in there I would also recommend updating the software the in the door modules (PDM & DDM) steering control (SCM & PSCM) and the head unit (ACM) as these all had glitches too.

But ensure battery performance is good first.

If in doubt put a better battery on, Focus MK4 batteries are junk
