Mk4 focus 1.5 ecoblue engine reliability

Featured Replies

Hi,

As topic says is this engine reliable? I’ll be doing about 20-25k miles a year and it’s got 48k on the clock. Im looking at 2019-20 auto estate with this 1.5 ecoblue engine.

Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the reply Eric,

So apart from the chain problem 48k wouldn’t be too bad ?

I've generally found diesels (if correctly serviced) to cope very well with high mileages.

However I've had no personal experience** of the 1.5 ecoblue but the chain linking the cams has come up several times on here.

**Plenty of people on here have, so no doubt further comments will follow.

To be going on with, there's a bit more discussion here on Mk 4 Focus engines (including the 1.5 ecoblue):

It's the transmission I'd worry about

The other issue with this engine is not so much about reliability but inconvenience. They have a small oil sump and need frequent DPF regens which dilutes and contaminates the oil quickly. Doing 25k a year in one of these you could easily need 4 oil changes a year.

Thanks for the input everyone, I appreciate it. I guess as its been said every engine has some sort of weakpoint.
