Featured Replies

hi guys

i am thining about buying some new disc and just wondering if you guys might know what size it is please?

i could just take my wheel off and measure them but thought i would ask first

i am also wanting to replace both my drum brakes with the assembled ones. will these do?

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/quinton-hazell/16614358

many thanks guys :)

The photo shows the drum brakes assembled but they will likely be packaged as the individual parts.

That kit also includes the wheel cylinders. Do you intend to replace them?

You will have to bleed the air from the system if you do replace them. Be prepared for stuck bleeder screws and corroded brake pipe fittings if you try to replace the cylinders.

If they aren't leaking or seized, the cylinders are best left alone.

thanks for the reply @AntonovAN12

i just wanted to replace everything as i have a feeling it hasnt been replaced in years!

i remember when i changed both on my skoda and that took me 2 days! yes, you read that right, 2 days! :D

on one side it took me nearly 7 hours so had to wait till next day to do the other one and that took nearly as long :D

Unfortunately he is stil using Windows 7, which does not like the new website, so he has left the building - a great shame, I miss both his humour and his knowledge.

And I must admit, I'm not a great fan of the new website either. (W11)

If the wheel cylinders are working correctly, I would advise anyone to leave them well alone.

As your car is now ten years old, the steel pipes that feed them are likely corroded. Trying to undo the pipe fittings could easily break them off the pipe. In that case you will have to replace some or all of the steel pipe.

Aftermarket parts could also be lower quality than the originals and prone to seizing or leaking much sooner.

Rear drum brakes are not normally prone to excess wear. I am sure the ones fitted to my 2005 Focus are the originals. They are still well within the specified thickness with no wear or scoring inside the drums. The brakes passed the last MOT without any problem.

I agree with all the above, and I had a car that still had the original Shoes at 275,000 miles. If you want to check the Wheel Cylinders peel back the Rubber slightly to see if there are any leaks and you should be able to move them with your fingers but be careful not to allow one to push the other one out when you do so.

If the above are ok then leave them alone unless a Bleed Nipple breaks.
