Car chip advice

Featured Replies

Hi. I have a chip on my fairly new Puma

It is nearly the size of the diameter of a 1p coin

Worth fixing myself with a touch up pen or more professional advice

I would use a pen that size

Call your local Chips away for nice professional job.

Not quite sure where that is, and whether a metal or plastic part. Looks like quite a deep gash.

I've had excellent repairs done by Chips Away, but not cheap. You can usually quickly get a free estimate by sending good clear shots of the damage to your local franchisee. But check out local reviews - some franchisees are better than others.

If the area is not too obviously visible, I've had reasonable results by diy, using touch up applied thinned and built up in layers with a fine artists brush (not the one that comes in the cap of the stick) and a lot of patience. If the damage is down to bare metal, I start with a layer of primer, after cleaning the area with a fine glass fibre pen.

Glue that penny over it. No-one will ever know! 😉

Seriously though, that looks like it's gone right through the lacquer, paint and undercoat to bare metal/plastic? I didn't think Ford paint could get much lower quality but that would suggest it has. Something needs to be done to prevent water getting in there and causing more damage over time. I'm not a massive fan of Chips Away but would recommend some sort of professional repair in this case.

Lol, "policy of continual improvement" - not!

To be fair, it looks like that's been quite some impact, though it's hard to tell from the pic.

That'll be hard to fix doing it yourself and most amateurs will touch up the surrounding paint that doesn't require any attention, then your repaired area resembles a small barnicle, if the car is the love of your life and you paid good money for it, then put your trust in a professional and let them do it.

You've just reminded me of pal who did just that, everything he did made it worse and he ended up having to have the whole panel professionallly resprayed.😀

When I touch up chips I use my jeweller's eye spy eyepiece, making the chip appear 10 times bigger, i'll use a toothpick to apply the paint into the chip recess only, a bit of paint at a time until its level, then leave it for a week, then do the same again using the lacquer.
