HVO Fuel

Featured Replies

Hi

I am getting both yes & no to this question, can I use this in a 2012 2.0 S Max? I have gone to my local main dealer and he is not willing to say either.

Ford haven't tested that engine on HVO as far as I can see. They have tested the later EcoBlue engine and confirm that it is compatible with those.

It is probably ok for your TDCI, but I doubt you'll find anyone willing to confirm 100%.

Looks like Ford only recommend on the commercial page from 2020MY.

You could try 50/50 see how you get on.

Beware though, it may pick up all the crud from the bottom of your tank and block the fuel filter

I don't know a lot about this apart from a brief read of:
https://www.volvotrucks.co.uk/en-gb/news/insights/articles/2025/may/what-is-hvo-fuel.html

My concern is that if it doesn't meet EN590 (or even if it does?) then one big risk is lubrication failure at the HP pump (Archoil may help but even that isn't guaranteed?)
You can't be too careful unless you are prepared to risk a major failure needing new pump, likely injectors, complete removal and flush of entire fuel system!
Am I being too pessimistic or don't know the properties of this fuel, can you get it at no cost or something?

EDit; It appears to be compatible but only mentions Transit:

Cheers guys, reading into this don't think I'll risk it as I only do about 3000 miles a year in it.

I've been looking into it, after this post.

It looks like it's 100% compatible with BMWs from 2016 on.

Apparently lubrication properties are better that Diesel, Cetane is 80 points (Diesel 40?) and up to 80% less soot on burn which means less DPF issues and a 10 to 15% MPG improvement. Win Win!!

I'm trying to find where I can get it and how much per litre now.

If it becomes more readily available I will switch

Let us know how you get on!

And don't have to drive too far to get it...

Used HVO in plant machinery on building sites, was told by the company I worked for it was 20% more expensive than diesel, but we had to use it because of green policies..

Presumably that's red diesel with less fuel duty?

Red diesel was made illegal to use on plant machinery a few years ago, and have to use regular diesel with the added tax or HVO which was about 20% more expensive than regular diesel.

If remember righty was about £2 a litre for HVO a couple of years ago.

Ah, that is interesting, thanks. I had missed that change.
