New Clutch again !!!!

Featured Replies

Clutch was replaced about 18 months ago in August 2024.

Went to start the car and the clutch would not go into any gear. Clutch was completely broken. Got it replaced like for like.

6 months later and exactly the same thing has happened. Need to find out what make this clutch was and try to avoid a replacement.

Im assuming a Ford original part will be ridiculously expensive? Failing that any after market clutch that anyone can recommend and won’t break on me in less than a year again……

Many thanks

Would need more vehicle info to determine which clutch your car has. Could be this one at around £300 genuine Ford.

Aftermarket I would recommend Sachs or Valeo.

I think it may have been LKS

Sorry LUK

Sorry LUK

LUK is a known brand, used by many garages.

In my experience the quality isn't quite as good as Sachs or Valeo, but should last longer than 18 months.

Maybe there is another fault causing the clutch to fail.

Holding it on a hill for example, I see loads of people doing that😬

The original clutches Ford uses are either LUK or Sachs.

I just ordered a new Sachs clutch kit for the 2.0 EcoBoost in our Focus ST250. Like many others have experienced, it turned out to be a LUK clutch inside Sachs packaging. Since Sachs is usually more expensive than LUK, it normally wouldn’t make sense to choose the Sachs-branded kit. I only went for it because I got it extremely cheap.

2.0 TDCI clutch should be able to cope with that tbf. I used to do it myself with 1.9/2.0 diesels creeping uphill in stop start traffic and never broke one.

Small engine petrol clutches you have to be much more careful with.

I don't think riding any clutch is a good idea to be fair

I didn't say it was a good idea, just that I've done it for years and had no problems. The best thing about diesels is the easy drive. Petrol's are horrible, having to keeping revving the engine and make a guess as to where the bite point will be each time. Trying to pull away uphill in a petrol with a knackered handbrake is a right pain. No problem at all in a diesel... (I've had several handbrake failures, yet not a single clutch failure!)

Both our Kuga MK2.5 1.5 EcoBoost and our Focus MK3 ST250 2.0 EcoBoost use the Ford/Getrag MMT6 transmission.

I was actually surprised by the size of the clutch friction plate in the ST250. It is only 240 mm in diameter. In the past, I have seen larger friction plates on less powerful engines.

It seems that the days of over-dimensioned clutches are long gone.
