Metallic clunk over bumps

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm new here so sorry if this topic has been done to death. I have a 2009 fiesta 1.6 tdci.

As the title says, I'm getting a metallic clunk/rattle on the front end. It's sounds like a shopping trolley going over cobbles when I'm on a bumpy section of road. I can't place it and its driving me daft.

Since I bought it in July its been an ongoing project, everything was original so everything was severely worn. The list of parts I've changed are as follows:

Front:

Wipers

Air filter

Battery

Anti roll bar links

Tyres

Oil and filter (Nov 25)

Shocks

Top mounts

Anti roll bar bushes

Wishbones

Coolant flush and change (Jan 26)

Fuel filter (90k miles)

Lower engine mount

Transmission mount

Upper engine mount

Short shifter

Weighted gear knob

Track rod ends

Springs

Back:

Tyres

Drum brakes and cables

Subframe

Bushes

Springs

Shocks

Top mounts

Exhaust back box

So despite every suspension component being changed I'm still getting this metallic rattle over bumps. I've shook everything under the car to see if anything moves and changed anything that didn't seem right.

I do have slight movement in the driveshafts, but this is more an "in/out" motion rather than an "up/down" and a mechanic buddy says that sort of movement is usually normal.

I also have slight movement in trim pieces like arch liners and the front bumper but I don't see them making the sound I'm hearing as its metallic sounding. I do have new clips coming to sort them out.

Anyway sorry for the length of this post but I wanted to give all the information. Does anyone have a clue or idea what to check next?

I have a video of the sound but the file size is too big to attach to this post

Thanks for any help

Dave

Have you checked the radiator? Common problem on Mk7's is the mounting bushes wearing allowing too much movement.

I have not, I didn't even know it had such mountings. I will make that my next job.

Thanks very much!

@TomsFocus

Hello again. Can I double check I'm ordering the right things? The upper I'm pretty certain about but the lower I'm not sure

Thanks

Yes that's the correct part number for both bushes. Usually it is only the top ones that need replacing, not the lower ones as well.

Unfortunately not the top bushes do I'll order the bottoms

The tops were worn though so definitely worth replacing

Hi, I just wanted to provide an update on this. I think I've finally found the issue or issues I should say.

I had one of those 3 o'clock in the morning epiphany's, check the pads on the left. So I did and realised there were no shims in there! Not only that, one of the slide pins was seized solid. Shims fitted and pin freed, no rattle.

Don't get me wrong, all the other stuff needed done but what an absolute tadger I am for not seeing this. Even more annoyingly, the garage that done the very early repairs for the MOT told me they fitted those shims, but only done the right side.

Anyway, problem solved and hopefully this'll be useful to anyone googling all the stuff I was trying to find a solution.

Thanks to @TomsFocus for his time and suggestions too
