Anyone got a fix for a sticky steering wheel on a MK3, it's just the centre I've tried a weak mix of IPA but it's done nothing. Like it's proper sticky, have noticed some shiny patches on the centre so assuming it's some rubber coating on top of plastic?

I used autoglym vynal dash cleaner and elbow grease...took a good couple of hours but worked eventually and wet wipes to wipe off..

This is a common problem.

It is caused by plasticizers (chemicals that keep plastic flexible) breaking down. This is usually due to age, exposure to heat, UV light, the use of aggressive cleaning products, etc.

The stickiness can usually be removed (or significantly reduced) by using a good automotive all purpose cleaner (APC). Most APCs are quite strong and need to be diluted with water, but this depends on the specific product and the level of degradation of the plastic.

Since the chemical composition of the plastic has permanently changed due to degradation, it is important to use a suitable plastic dressing afterward to help restore and protect the material.
