Oil Pump Drive Belt Query

Featured Replies

Hi, my son wants to buy a 2020 Ford Focus EcoBoost. From what I understand, Ford replaced the timing wetbelt in these engines with a timing chain in 2019 but there is still an oil pump drive belt in them. I want to try to understand whether the oil pump belt causes problems, whether you can check the condition of it and how much they cost to replace. I want to avoid him having big problems in the future. Any advise gratefully received!

If the oil pump belt breaks the engine will be starved of oil and damaged within a few minutes/seconds.

Changing the oil pump belt is a big job, similar to replacing the wet timing belt on the older Ecoboost engines. Cost £800 to £1800 depending on where it is done.

No reliable way of checking it's condition as far as I am aware.

A 2020 is only 4 years away from the belt change (10 years) and it would probably be prudent to do it earlier, from what we have seen with the earlier version.

No easy way to check the belt as Paul mentioned. You could have the sump removed for a physical check, but at a cost unless you can diy. See this earlier thread:
