Ford Focus MK 4; both USB not working

Featured Replies

As title states I have a 2020 Ford Focus MK 4 (that replaced my 1.6Tdci Zetec); both USB ports no longer seem to be working properly, in case they are not the same in all the MK4 models I have one in the space in front of the gearbox and another in the centre armrest compartment.

I use one for music stored on a Micro USB and the other I plug my android phone in for Android Auto, all had been perfect for fours years; until today. Although the phone still charges it no longer boots up the Android Auto app, I notice on the phone all the 'Use USB for' boxes, 'File Transfer', 'USB Tethering' etc are greyed out. I have tried both ports and three different leads, when plugged into my laptop the 'Use USB for' boxes can be selected, I used the same leads I tried in the car, I also noticed that the music was not longer available on the Micro USB.

A google search did reference it may be a fuse, located under the glove box, but looking at the manual none seem to reference a USB link, hence my post; any suggestion?

I am not exactly very clever when it comes it anything electric and fuseboxy so 'Janet and John' explanations appreciated

Many thanks in anticipation

Paul

There is no fuse for the USB ports so that can be ruled out as a possible cause immediately. The USB ports are actually a USB hub that splits the single USB connection of the APIM into 2 different USB ports. The USB hub is connected to the APIM with a single USB cable and a 2 power wires (12 Volt positive and negative).

The USB hub is not intended to power a phone. Modern phones can draw so much power that they can cause the power wires of the USB hub to melt or cause the APIM's circuit board to burn out.

I recommend inspecting the power wires of the USB hub. If these are in good condition measure if there is 12 Volt power on these wires. If there is power the APIM is fine and the problem can be a defective USB hub. If there is no power the APIM itself may be defective.

Thanks for replying JW1982 👍

My model of car although with Sync 3 will work will Bluetooth on my phone for connectivity to allow phone calls, texts etc, but for 'Android Auto' I need to plug it in with a USB lead? When I do to boot up that app up it also charges the phone, I referenced the latter in case it was relevant in as much with my limited understanding I was working on the theory of it either worked 100% or 0%, if it was 0% I'd have thought it would not even charge?

"I recommend inspecting the power wires of the USB hub" That's way beyond me I am afraid. I assumed both ports originate from the same source so I do in part understand what you've said, which was why I was thinking along the lines of the non existent fuse and potential easy fix that with Forum guidance I could have taken on and made good!

In reality all I really use 'Android Auto' for is Google Map navigation, if I can find a way of doing that via Bluetooth without spending money repairing what maybe broken USB ports then that's a workaround that works for me

Even if the 12 Volt power of the USB hub is not present the phone can still charge (very slowly) from the 5 Volt USB connection between the APIM and the USB hub.

The fact that the phone is still charging does not automatically mean that the hub is still powered.

Since the USB hub relies on the 12 Volt power source for Android Auto and Apple Carplay to work inspecting the wiring will be the 1st logical step.
