Thin sheet metal on Fords

Featured Replies

Evening Guys. I’ve heard a few people over the years mention ford panels are thin. Any truth in it? I always thought the opposite on My Mark 1.

Got a neighbour who has a 24 plate Ford Puma and it scares him to wash it! The roof pops In & out if he's harsh with the sponge.

That sort of story has been doing the rounds every few years. I would say there is truth in it, but for cars generally, not just Ford.

Computer aided design and the search for lower weight has led to different thickness metals being used in various parts of a bodyshell, rather than the same throughout. Steels are better quality, higher strength and more resistant to corrosion.

I recall my late father in law had a Lada in the 70s - the metal felt thick enough for a tank but it rusted at a prodigious rate!
