I'm considering buying a 2.0 TDCI Ford Focus II. I love these cars (especially the titaniums) But from researching them, I'm worried about the DPF as i've read these can go wrong quite a lot. After having to sell my astra this week as a non-runner after the timing chain going, i'm a bit paranoid about major faults occuring and really want to make sure I avoid anything!

I've read that the DPFs should be replaced every 75k miles. Because of my budget, the Focuses i'm looking at have about 70k-90k miles on the clock. So whatever I buy, i'm going to look into replacing it anyway. How much am i looking at (parts & labour) to replace the DPF?

Also, do all 2.0 TDCIs have a DPF? And if not, how do I know if one has one or not? Is the DPF visible under the bonnet? I know all cars have their faults and problems, I'm just trying to research what to look out for!

Cost is circa £1000 - dealer dependant! as a rule, put away £1200 for the replacement of the DPF. As for the DPF, not all 2.0 engines have them as they were an optional extra, by the looks of your profile your looking at a 2006 which certainly fits the bill for the optionals. DPF is not visible under the bonnet, as its behind the head shielf with the catalytic converter, under the car in the exhaust system.

The onyl way you will know is by checking with Ford, provide them the VIN number / REg number (if its the original plate) they will be able to tell you the status of the DPF :)

Hi, try using here http://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleRegSelector.do;jsessionid=2B69D23FFD2727FF236AFAEFCEE0EAAE.dulv1366 and put in the reg number, contary to 'popular' I believe the dpf should last you well over 100k. However you can check the service schedule within etis as well.

Good suggestion Cuke, I went on there and put my old number plate in, it said the engine was a DV6 model - Can anyone else do the same thing, if you know your vehicle does / does not have one, then hopefully not will have no DV6 at the end, and those unfortunate enough to have them, should have DV6?

Either that or get a 1.8TDCi as they don't have DPF's. ;)

Hi, isn't though the 2.0l engine much better it terms of refinment because of the engineering?

Possibly, I think that the 1.6 and 2.0 are newer engines both 16v where-as the 1.8 is a slightly older engine and is 8v. Thats why the BHP is the same for the 1.6 & 1.8 but the 1.8 has more torque.

Doubt there is that much difference than there would be between the 1.6 > 1.8 or the 1.8 > 2.0. The 2.0 (or at least the ones i've seen) also has a six speed gear box which i imagine helps as well.

Hi, if I had the choice personally I'd go for the, quieter, 2.0l, if I'm correct it is the same as the one in my Mk4 Mondeo, then get it remapped...
