Side Light Wire

Featured Replies

I'm going to get some ring DLRs, and they wire to the side lights, so they work legally where they are always on, but when you put the lights on, they switch off, just need to know what colour the side light wire is?

check this out buddy

I know how I would wire them up, to make em switch off with the sidelights..... and it wouldnt be to follow the guide I posted, as they will constantly stay on with that guide, but out of noseyness, how you planning to get em to switch off when sidelights come on?

  • Author

They come with an auto switcher like this >switch< 2 wires to battery or fuse, 4 to the 2 lights, and 7th wire goes to side light power, so when power goes to side light it sends power up this wire add switches them off, like this and wiring diagram here

tis a very complicated way to do it.

I've been told that you can just wire them into two different holes in your light connection to get exactly the same result.

lightconnectorcopy.jpg

If you wire the + and - into 3 and 8... the DRL will constantly stay on....

If you wire the + and _ into 3 and 1... the drl will be on until the sidelights are switched on

(its either 3 and 1, or 3 and 6 for them to go off)

a friend that has a Ford Focus done this and it works perfectly, so I assume the wiring for the 2010 Focus is the same as the mk7 Fez.

I don't have any DRL's to try this on, but it can be tested without any cutting by just holding wires in place.

What, just the 2 wires, nothing else? I've got a pair on, but they're not working through a fuse, they just have 2 wires out of each, so if I put these in to the right holes, they'll just work?

  • Author

having a look at mine, and they're not numbered as per picture, top row is 2 4 6 8 10, bottom 1 3 5 7 9

  • Author

couldn't get them to work, could only do it with side lights on!

Sorry, I didn't label it the same as Ford, I just threw up numbers into the pic.

Yeah genuinely, my mate done it on his focus.

See the thread I posted earlier, that was a Fez, but he wired it up to he constant. Hold off and I'll have a play around tnight or tmoro

My DRL's use 2 relays, 1 to come on with ignition then the other the to go off with dipped beam.

It ok, done it now, got the Ring Ursa, and all you need to do is white to power, black to earth, yellow to side lights, I used for the power, number 8 (4 on the pic) and for the lights number 5 (8), they do come with an inline 10amp fuse!

which sidelight cable did you tap it into??? from memory its 5 and 6 aint it the two cables, just wanting to know which is positive and which is the negative feed on them??

they are number 8 and 5, 8 is power, and 5 is side light, they work fine, like this my vid

Hi

Just been following you info on fitting the DRL's and I have some questions which I hope you can clear up for me please?

1. You say you fitted Ring Ursa DRL's but where did you buy them from? I've looked on the Halfords website and you can get Ring Lyra, Ring Cruise and Ring Daytime Running Lights - Pair but they don't appear to have Ring Ursa. Can you provide me with a link for them?

2. Are the Ring Ursa lights LED DRL's and what do they cost?

3. There are only three (3) wires with this particular set of Ring Ursa DRL's and they are to be connected into the main lighting connector? Is that the main lighting connector that D4nz0 is holding and is it under the bonnet and where exactly is it situated?

3A. When you disconnect the lighting connector to connect the wires, is it necessary to disconnect the battery?

4. When you connect the three wires,(white, black and yellow), do you just push the bared wire into the holes and then connect the light connector back up to keep them there?

5. I can see that you fitted the DRL's into the front grill but your picture is not that clear. How are they fixed to the gril and is there any chance of providing a nice close up pic please?

INFO: Halfords have a video on how to fit some of their DRL's and one of them gives the required legal height from the road and distance from the outer edge of the car.

Outer edge of DRL to be 400mm from outer edge of vehicle

DRL height above the ground must be a minimum of 250mm and maximum of 1500mm.

Thanks in advance, BHeart

Ooops forgot the measure thing, ant cut the grill to inset them!

These are them Ursa but only from only 35 on Amazon but I couldn't wait, wanted now so bought there and then this morning, they are driving lights, but on the receipt as styling lights!

As I said before I used number 8 for the white power, and number 5 for the yellow switcher, you do have a third one, which is to the earth, and I used the bit near the suspension strut where the fuse box is held on, as my others were earthed here.

As for attaching the 2 cables, I did one last check, then went to cut the wires to put connectors in, but being a wuss, I panicked, and didn't get right through, just mostly the outer, creating a gap, I just wrapped end of the cable around, and insulate taped it in place, on the second (the yellow switcher) I had difficulty matching that, so took a while longer.

Just had to get the wires down, and the bit I used before wouldn't allow 2 plugs to go through, so went inside the top grill and down infront of bonnet clip, cut 2 struts out of the grill and they are lined up to the back.

Hope this helps

Hi Mark

Thanks for your response.

Where did you fit the relay under the bonnet?

I have a query with regard to the 'in-fuse' that is fitted, you say that it is 10 amp fuse but in the 'Halfords link' you provided for the Ring Ursa DRL's in your reply to me, it states in the .pdf fitting info that the replacement fuse for the relay is a '3 amp blade type' and it is located on the white wire to the ignition source. So I assume that the Halfords info is incorrect?

That's what it says on my instructions, a 3amp, but it's a 10! They come with a try button, and a pack of 8 AA batteries for this, you have to cut the white wire from the switch and the black off the battery pack.

I put the relay near the front of the bonnet, and then shut the bonnet to find it wouldn't, so on investigation, I'd put the relay where the passenger side rubber stopper sits! so it's to the side of that!

They are fairly easy to fit, even I've managed it, and amazed my self, but yesterday they stopped working, after I stalled, and the usb stopped too, it would recognise the ipod, but button did nothing, anyways, after karting, usb was working again, but lights not! once at a stop, I popped the bonnet, touched the wires, and it was a dicky earth, will have to sort that when I get the car back home! But the USB was unrelated!

Sorry, just re read your first post!

The light connector in the picture is on the back of the head light, I pushed the wires in for testing purposes, and my mum was checking if they worked for me, while I did the start lights on, lights of stop in the car, then she said hang on, this light isn't working, and had to point out it wasn't plugged in!

As for fixing them on, they come with brackets, and 2 self tapping screws. They are fidley to fit, as there isn't much room to get the screws in (you can use a spanner, but we dunt have one that small) and the allen bolts back in to fix the light to the bracket, then I had a thought, that they have slots, so loosened off the screws a bit with grips above, and slid them back a side at a time.

as for the correct position, a tape measure shows me, they are nearly square, 350 in, and 360 up!

Hi Mark

Just finished uploading my latest reply and saw your close up jpeg of where you fitted the DRL's into the front grill - great pic quality m8. :)

Many thanks for your reply. :)

So the wires on the relay are long enough to feed them neatly around the engine compartment and down to the DRL's?

The way to wire the DRL's in your info is fine but it's weird though because when you watch the video for fitting the DRL's on the Halfords website, they mention about connecting RED and BLACK wires directly to the battery but you don't mention connecting any wires to the battery?

I tried the battery first, but they're always on, even with engine off, and there's no red!

They are long enough for the fiesta, as lights have cable on the back, the drives side is too long (it's tucked in behind the fog light) and passenger side is too short for them to reach the top!

That picture was taken on the iPhone!

Looks sweet that! Might have to give it a go :)

Should get a guide up with some pictures and get it Pinned!

I'll try one at the weekend, need to take a few pictures!

Hi Mark

Chris Ecc comments about posting a guide is great and just what we need and I can't wait for you to sort the guide out.

I've bought the Ring Ursa DRL's and although the info you've posted is excellent, I'm still not sure if you 'scotchlocked' the white and yellow wires to 8 and 5 from the back of the lighting plug from the headlamp, so I'll wait for you to post your 'step by step' guide of how and where you fitted the DRL's to your Fiesta. :)

No, as I said I was cutting the wires to put in a connector, but chickened out and made a gap in the outer casing, I then wrapped the end of the wire around the small gap and taped it in place with insulation tape!
