Whining Noise

Remember it's only my suggestion of the problem but it's not a cheap job and a knackered lay shaft bearing can result in a scragged gearbox.

ehug, its only done 60,000mls

To add - there is absolutly no noise when the clutch is up in neutral when stationry

I'd say definitely gearbox related.

Whining boxes in my experience has always been a bearing and pretty much always lay shaft.

Get it diagnosed by a mechanic, it's the only way to be 100% certain.

my mk1 had a bearing needing replaced lay shaft bearing as well with only 70k on the clock and a very careful previous owner a gearbox specialist wanted to strip the box down and assuming there were no other parts needing replaced the value was £700 that was just after a new clutch kit was fitted so the car was traded in i got £1000 trade in for the car. as said its gear box related for sure the problem is to find out what it is will involve the gearbox being removed and stripped or a refurb box being fitted either way its not cheap by any means it will only get worse it starts off as almost not audible at all then gets a bit worse then suddenly starts rattling away like a tin can full of stones and it happens quite quickly

been looking on youtube for layshaft bering noises and it doesnt sound like any. Have you got a link to a video of what yours sounded like.

Could you hear the noise from the outside also, I cant

Also, i'm tired of this now, i'll probably leave it untill it breaks

if its only a bit annoying, i would keep running it till it gets bad. its hard to diagnose small annoying noises anyway.

Yeah I mean I first herd the noise pretty much exactly a year from today and ive done like 16,000mls since then

and there is every chance you could see another 16k miles if not more

well i got rid of my focus 1.6 2001 at 110k miles ish. gearbox was fine, no noises and still on original clutch but it was just about done.

in all honesty, it was a great car

If I get mine to 100,000mls I will be happy, but if im having these issues now I dont see how it will :(

I dont even know why i might be posibly getting bearing noises so early - what causes these to wear out?

like i said the car could go many miles yet have you ever had the gearbox oil checked? i used to get mine done every 6 mnths when the noise started and it helped get more miles you may just need an oil top up or change on the box

Oil was changed 12,000mls/6months ago

What I cant understand is if I start with the clutch up (in neutral) then just after starting I hear a spinning up sound (I think related to the whinining noise), if I start with the clutch down (in neutral) the noise doesnt happen at all.

I thought theres nothing in the gearbox moving when in neutral (clutch up or down)

I get this noise. It is only present when I start the car up- if I am stopped at lights and I raise the clutch in neutral I don't get this noise. It's a bit odd, as if it only occurs when the car is cold.

I too am driving around on a newish clutch and cylinder and am getting some whining from the engine. I hope the flywheel is not on its way out.

Is your car running efficiently?

?

with these types of noise it has to be taken to a mech who can hear it what i will say is fords are notorious for gearbox whines many are just normal i knew a guy who has had almost every ford in the last 30yrs and every1 had a small whine with the clutch up in neutral ford even replaced the gearbox twice before a master tech came from the factory and said they all do that

John, just wind the volume up on the radio and forget about the whine. :D

I assume everyone else is interested as to what it is also, then?

i think its just the normal gearbox whine i reckon if you took that to ford they will say its normal
