Hi guys ,my focus 1.6 tdci has a similar problem after the alternator failed , and a replacement fitted , since that single event the battery light is now on pretty much permanently once up to working temperature, never on at a cold start, my obd2 shows a p1632 fault code , so I replaced the engine temperature sensor with a ford one for £38 to no avail, the reading this thread checked the harness and replaced the alternator plug and 100 MM. of cable with anew one , I cut off the old one and replaced with new (rather than replace whole engine wiring loom) , still to no avail. I know the car starts and runs fine even when doing 400 mile round trips and short ones the battery (calcium) always starts no problem. The voltage at the cigar lighter is 12.6 with ignition off and 14.2 when cold and in warming up running time , and when at running temperature which is when the battery light comes on it is 13.25 volt .ok so smart charge seems to be working and she runs just fine BUT why is battery light coming ON?

much obliged peter

How did you manage to solve it. I have a similar one

Anybody sorted this yet? I don't care if post is old if nowhere I can find answer to this problem.

Just replaced my alternator and now I am getting a similar problem. Whilst on tickover the battery light will come on but the batery is still charging. I get two faults popping up

p1632

and another which i have forgotten which basically states smart circuit overheat.

The car is running fine with no issues and the battery is at 100 percent charge state.

Has anyone got to the bottom of this problem yet.

Hi I have ford focus tdci 1.6 and have been facing same problem got alternator changed twice and battery. I noticed when i turn heating on and headlight the battery light in dash comes on when car is running on motorway battery light goes off. The alternator not passing enough voltage when using headlights and heating system. Taking it to electrician this Wednesday to get wiring and fuse checked let see if he can figure out the problem. The specs of alternator that is currently in is 150A and 12v and manufacture is Ridex.

I've been having this issue for over 5 years now. Battery light comes on, stop the car (turn it off), wait 2 mins, turn it on and the battery light is off. Get to my destination, do my thing, get in the car, set off, battery light comes on, stop the car (turn it off), wait 2 mins, turn it on and the battery light is off.

Effectively the battery light comes on every other journey.

After a couple of years, battery light comes on permanently. At this point the battery seems to stop charging, and the car dies on the driveway. I charge it up with a battery charger. AA come out and tow it to a garage where they replace battery and alternator. then all is ok, apart from battery light coming on every other journey again.

We're now another couple of years down the line, and the battery light is on permanently again, and I'm having to charge the battery myself every fortnight.

I have a 2009 1.8TDCI and the alternator has a one wire plug coming out of it. I have an ELM with MS/HS switch, and I can see p1632 error.

I've attached appropriate images to this post.

Any ideas? Anything I can look for with the Forscan software?

There are two types of smart charge alternator. One has a 3 pin plug, fitted to Mk2/2a Focus & many other cars. The other type has a two pin plug, with only 1 wire used. This is mostly a Focus page, and the one wire (LIN bus) type was only fitted after 2011 to the Mk3. But as your car is a Mondeo, it may well have the 1 wire / 2 pin version.

All the error codes in your list that I have looked at are connected with low voltage or voltage supply failure, so are likely to be due to the charging problem, not the cause of the charging problem. I would suspect a wiring problem with this LIN bus wire from the ECU to the alternator, if the replacement alternator is the correct type.

I have this issue, and the single wire alternator.

Have you checked the running coolant temperature. This can be an issue if the water jacket is not reaching operational temperature.

Hope this may be of assistance.
