Xreg 2000 Focus - Central Locking Intermittent Issue

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I have done a bit of searching on this forum, and although I have seen a lot of Central Locking issues, none of them really described my issue, so I thought I'd give this a try!

Issue 1:

Very randomly, whilst driving, I will hear a whirring noise, and then my doors will all lock.

At this point, I cannot manually unlock the driver door.

I can manually unlock the front passenger door, and after doing so, the central locking eventually unlocks all doors.

If it does not, I need to use the central locking button on the key to open the doors when i stop the car.

- This happens around 1-2 times a week.

Issue 2:

Activating and deactivating the central locking using the buttons on the key seems very intermittent.

Sometimes it works first time, but the majority of the time, I am standing next to my car tapping the button waiting for it to work.

I replaced the battery when I first bought the car, as i noticed that the key's range was very low.

To be honest, I'm not sure where to start!

I have seen the posts describing how to sync the key to car, but I do not think that this is relevant for me at this point, but I may be wrong!

Any advice would be appreciated!!

If I have missed out any vital info, please let me know!

Thanks

Arus

Hi Simon,

That sounds odd. It sounds like you might have a short somewhere in the front doors, that is closing the circuit and thinks that you have activated the lock, so perhaps stripping the doors down and checking the wiring is a starting point. If your battery in your key is good, then I would say it sounds like perhaps something is obstructing at the receiver end. For example, since installing my Illuminated Ignition Barrell, there is more wire and plastic next to the receiver, so I find that in some directions, the reception is poor, others its excellent.

Sounds like the drivers side central locking solenoid is the problem.

I used to get the random lock/unlock while the car was running, fun in winter if I was leaving the car running while I was de-icing the windows.

Had to either leave one window down or carry a spare key.

The problem was found to be water ingress into the drivers lock mechanism shorting over the contacts, and as the drivers side is the primary unit it would deadlock the car.

Solution was a replacement mechanism and grease.

Hey,

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I'll check out the Haynes manual to make sure I don't damage the door when i strip it.

Where abouts in the car is the receiver located?

Thanks

most likely in the headlining near the centre light

Hello,

After all of your suggestions, it seems to have fixed itself!

No idea what happened there, but I will keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the help!

Glad to hear it, perhaps it was water ingress, and all the recent heat has evaporated it?

Glad to hear it, perhaps it was water ingress, and all the recent heat has evaporated it?

Potentially, but considering the British summer, I'll find out in a week!

Looking forward to a positive outcome, and if you cant wait for the british summer, there is always a jet wash!
