Hi Guys

has anybody fitted two tone air horns to above, if so how did you achieve it

if possible I would like to make them switchable from existing factory fits

Looking at my centre console there is a spare position for a switch, on righthand side

but not fitted, although existing switches in console are oddly shaped ?

Technically its easy to do, you could just leave the old horn on and just switch the air horns off/ on

Hi guys

I have had on a couple of times Pratt's pull out in front of me

causing me to brake heavily, when questioned, their excuse

was I never saw you, or heard me with louder horns if they don't see

me will certainly hear me....

I can assure you its not a wind up' I think most cars have

feeble wimpy horns, far better be heard than accident

Hi, im my opinion loud horns or not they still will not hear or see you, but the focus ones are loud enough. Besides isn't there a maximum decibel of a car horn?

Hi I'm not sure of max levels of air horns that can be fitted, I supposed all ones

supplied for UK market would be legal, I had on older cars Maserati twins

they were never picked up on dreaded M.O.T, but worth checking with

your local test centre what db,s your allowed to fit, before becoming illegal

My understanding there is no limit to loudness !

They just must not have alternating tones like police, ambulance, fire brigade or any emergency services !!!

The last time I fitted these was on a Mk3 Cortina. All I did was disconnect the wireing to the original horn and connect it to the air horns. No switches or relays, just a straight swap over.

Some may draw a bit more current than the old horn, it may be a good idea to add a relay

Hi FOCA

thanks for that info, I will bear that in mind possibly

needing a relay, now all I have to do is find original

Ford horns, as I don't have a workshop manual...

Regards....

My engine/ car already sounds like a truck, i was already thinking about getting "truck" type air horns (but 12v) - the louder the better! - i think ite a great idea! - i would consider it a safety accident prevention device - the only reason ive not done it is ive been busy with other things and i don't want to add extra weight to the car, but for this - it would be worth it!

i wonder if this one is road legal? -

Get someone to press the horn while you look for it under the bonnet!, you will soon find it! (ear plugs/ defenders might be a good idea!)

I'm sure that would be legal as single tone, and 110db, I once found dual air horns

rated at 117db, must do another search...lol

Nice find - Ford should do them as an optional extra

If they are tucked out of sight, now-one will know they are fitted - till you use them

Thanks for reminding me - i might just get a set!

For you - probably, space may be limited and with the air horns you have 3 items - a 200mm/8" horn, a 150mm/6" horn and a 100mm/4" compressor can - its a lot of hardware to find space for, with the twin compressor-fess horns they would probably fit behind the grille

How they compare sound-wise - who knows? (the dual horns are not actually air horns, but loud twin "conventional" horns, so may sound different from air horns)

You should do a thread on fitting them

you could buy/ try both (just kidding/ though they are only about £20 each )

Hi I read your article on your extensively modified Mondeo

and being honest I was totally baffled in some items you

described you must be very knowledgeable or clever

also what you have done must have cost a small fortune

I have heard that a free flow air filter will help with a little HP gain

and possible water injection into intake manifold downstream of air filter

to make incoming air a lot more dense..my focus goes like stink

on a very wet day, but I chicken out on lack the of road grip.....LOL

fit a 12v dc 5 pin relay connect the factory fit to the n/c side and the air horns to n/o ..when the relay is energized it will operate the air horns .. use an acc power to energise the relay via an indipendant switch and you can choose which horn to operate ..still using the sterring wheel push button

Hi ferretfloozy

Thanks for that info, would relay be marked with n/c side and n/o I presume n/c is normally closed

and n/o is normally open, I though tags/contacts just had numbers on them from memory ?

acc power I presume is accessory power, thats first press of starter button, without

depressing the clutch to start engine ?

and for switch that's 3 position on/off/on ?

Excuse my ignorance....

Agreed - I also thought the best way of activating the horn was by using the existing horn button, and activating the relay from the existing horn, if the existing horn was simply left on (stock horn AND air horns when air horns switched on - louder), only a single pole (SPST) switch (to activate air horns so they sound when horn button is pressed) would be nessesary

I always feel its better/ safer to take the main power (for the horn/s etc) directly from the (+) battery via an inline fuse, this protects the cars' loom and allows high power/ current accessories

I was thinking about this, and i thought if you are driving along and you need to use the horn (in an emergency situation) you don't want to be fiddling around with switches etc

one answer is to have the air horns normally switched "ready" to sound when the horn switched is pressed,

Or a timer circut on the air horn, so by pressing the horn button, first the "regular" horn comes on, then, after a second or so, the air horns come on (just by holding the horn button down) , this way, you could "beep" the (stock) horn "quietly" or use the air horns, all from the regular horn switch, so it would always be ready/ without fiddling with extra switches, and no "non matching" switches in sight (a neater solution - the air horn/s would come on "automatically")

I could make up a diagram

timer circut -
