Chain Or Belt?

Featured Replies

Just bought a 2005 1.8 diesel focus (avoided the french engines). Are these belt or chain driven and when should they be changed? Also a slight knocking noise when its idle but it drives fine and it all feels ok,besides it pulling to the left slightly which is probably a tire or tracking.

belt driven and the change interval is a touchy subject ford state a silly mileage i think most change the timing belt with a full timing belt kit around 80k

150k is the ford recommended just had mine done at 100k as the water pump had gone so killed two birds with one stone

The 2005 1.8 TDCI engine is equipped with both a timing belt and a chain.

The crankshaft and diesel injection pump are connected by a chain. The diesel injection pump is connected to the camshaft by a timing belt.

After 03-01-2008 Ford changed the chain which connects the crankshaft with the diesel injection pump for a so called wet belt. This is basically a timing belt which is running through the engine oil. From what I know the chain and wet belt should be interchangable.

Regarding the Ford Etis software both the timing belt and the chain/wet belt needs to be changed at 150,000 KM (which should be arround 90,000 Miles). Most people and even may garages only change the timing belt because they do not know the chain/wet belt needs to be changed as well. In my opinion this is not a big problem for the chain but for the wet belt it can be very risky. Recently I have seen a wet belt when it was changed (at approximately 150,000 KM) which lost some of the teeth completely.

So what youre saying is my 55 plate shouldnt have a wet belt anyway?I was led to beleive that chains are generally strong and dont really break during the life of the engine

How hard is it to change a timing belt?DIY job or better off taking it somewhere?

Wet belt is a nightmare 10 hour job u be probably better off talking engine out an doing it an problem is if ur car ain't service at exact intervals by ford dealer u wil have no come back if it snaps an engine is damage

See thing is most ford belts have duration of ten years an old mondeo petrol an diesel chains rarely ever gave a problem so way they see it belts a lot cheaper an they will need be changed meaning more profit for ford like if u look at most other cars timing belts due in 5 years meaning more work for them more money it's a joke

Old Mondeos, petrol or diesel never had chains.

01 to 07 have chains maybe I was not specific enough

That's not old ;)

I did get it wrong in my original post though as I forgot the Mk1 and Mk2 2.5 V6 had chains rather than belts.

Ford officially reckon they chain from chain to wet belt for build date 03/01/2008 onwards for the Focus.
