Ford Focus '59 - Engine 'surges'.....

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I bought a '59 plate ford focus 1.8 petrol a couple of weeks ago.

I've noticed a potential problem with it, and wondered if anyone has had anything similar.

Firstly, whenever I start the car - somewhere in the engine there is a 'ping' which generally happens when i change from 1st to 2nd gear, but it has also happened when it first gear - so I'm guessing it is something to do with getting to a certain number of revs.

This will only happen once, within the first 30 secs or so of moving. However it isn't anything to do with the engine being cold, because even if i switch off the engine for a minute (or stall!), it will do it again when i get going - around the revs of changing between 1st and 2nd gear.

Secondly, a few times now when i've come to a slow / stop at a junction or turning, the engine has 'surged' / the revs have jumped around and the car sounds like it's going to stall - but hasn't actually stalled.

I'm wondering if these two things are connected..... any ideas?

The car comes with a 3 month warranty. Wondering if this would be covered under the warranty (bearing in mind they normally require something to be 'broken' before they'll cover the cost), and what exactly needs repairing (if anything). Or whether I should be taking it back to the dealer I bought it from....

Any advice would be gratefully received!!

Thanks,

Matilda

Im sure there was a recall on the focus because of said ping im sure it was a manufacturing fault and the car was running fuel rich ie using more fuel than it should and it was this that was causing the 'ping' ill double check and get back to you. Whether thats related to the other problems im not sure but id deffo take it back to the dealer and get it fixed.
