Have I Knackered My Ecu? :(

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

As I have posted before about my DPF fault code P2002, I decided to use my OBD reader using Torque Pro clear my fault code as it was affecting my MPG and range.

Now, since I have cleared the code, my car is showing really erratic instant MPG figures!

On a flat level road doing 30 in 3rd gear it would normally show an instant MPG of around 60-70 MPG.

It is currently reading low 20's (sometimes jumping up to high 50's) since clearing the code and I'm concerned that I have done some damage to the ECU by clearing the code?

There Is a disclaimer on Torque which clearly states that any code clearing is done at my own risk and I'm now thinking that maybe I shouldn't have messed around with it........ :(

What could be causing this erratic MPG response?

I have now reset all my average readings on my display to zero to see what this week's run to and from work works out at as I normally get around 54 average MPG.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

A very worried Mike....

instant fuel and average mpg are totally different readings..... id say in your 1.6 around town driving dependant you should see about 50mpg (average mpg) as i get between 40 and 44 mpg in a 1.8 tdci....

if this is a gray code, you cannot wipe it unless the problem is fixed, as its stored on the ecu and is un-wipeable... as i use the torque pro app also...

Hi Martyn.

There were two codes stored. A greyed out code starting with the letter "U". I don't recall the code number though.

The second code was in red with a warning triangle and this was the DPF fault code P2002.

I removed the code/s and the result was what I posted above.

I'm used to the car now and know what to expect from it as far as instant MPG is concerned and these new readings since removing the codes are just not normal for my car!! :(

There are no DTC codes stored using the dashboard trick by the way...

I think they take time to relearn the setting /might be wrong

As a side note:

I put a tenner's worth of diesel in from Morrison's and that was just to see me through to payday on Friday where the usual V-Power will be being used.

It couldn't possibly be anything to do with that could it?

Bit of a coincidence?

I still think its the messing with the ECU that has done it.....

ive cleared many codes with code readers and its never done any damage to mine

that's the idea to clear your own codes just run it and let it re learn

I don't think the diesel will harm it

Thanks for the reassurance deswez.

I'm new to all this ECU reading malarkey and I guess its just a learning experience...

I hope you're correct and my ECU is just re-learning...

Your ECU is fine -

The instant MPG does not mean anything - i had a meter on an Audi i had and it would show 7mpg going uphill, full throttle and 100mpg going down the same hill on the other side - if you understand how it works - it all makes sense

Also, for example a trip to a track day etc can knock your avarage down and it can take ages to recover the "old" displayed MPG

Give the ECU a chance to "re-learn" and the figures should sort themselves out, if not, i would not worry about it and the displayed MPG is rarely accurate anyway compared to the "true" MPG

From my perspective the instant fuel makes no difference at all.

A couple of days of normal driving and everything will settle down.

BTW, I've never had any adverse reactions from clearing codes.

Thanks so much guys for the reassuring info!

What threw me at first was the reading you get at idle which always says (for me anyway) 0.1g/hour but after I put that tenner in from Morrison's, it started reading 0.5g/hour so that set me off looking for issues. The car is running great with it saying 0.1 again etc on the way into work this morning.

I'm not a worrier by nature but if theres something I dont understand, I start to overthink things until I've learnt enough about it then I settle down. LOL

Thanks again guys. :)
