Water Ingress Into Boot, With Pics!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First time poster here.

I have a MkII (I think) Focus hatchback, from 2004 which has developed quite bad water ingress into the boot.

It doesn't appear to be the boot seals and the boot shelf is dry but the water looks to be getting in really low on the driver's side, running down the inside of the car and collecting in a wiring loom before trickling into the spare wheel.

I've had a look at the rear light assembly, which annoyingly I didn't manage to get off before it got dark but on first glance it looks ok and perhaps too high for where the water is coming in?

Any ideas? Could it be the rear bumper trim or something?

Any pointers gratefully received!

Andy

Nope it will be a mk 1.5 so it will either be the spoiler seal or the lights or the boot hinge to check if its the spoiler look under the plastic panel inside the boot beneath the spoiler if there's water marks its leaking second and most likely is the lights undo the screws holding them in youll see 2plastic cups the screws go into screw the screw in a few threads and use pliers to wiggle it upwards and out gently.apply a good sealant to the area arond the square hole and a bit under the plastic cup then refit smoothing excess sealant around the edges refit the light and that should solve it do both cups top and bottom 3rd is the boot hinge look around where its attatched youll see a cup section that the hinge sits in the bottom and sides are sealed but not the top heavy rain gets into the unsealead area apply sealant into this area i used a wooden lolly stick to get into the awkward bit with the boot half open half shut to get access to it do this both sides once dry you csn overpaint it with a touch up kit

Thanks for the speedy and very detailed reply, I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know how I get on. :)

I was browsing the threads and saw your leak issues .

I have a 2005 Focus 4dr and had this problem a few years ago . In my case the aperture in which the black plastic vent fits into on each side of the car (just opposite end to where your arrow is in the photo) was at fault . Fixed successfully with a generous helping of silicone sealant but it took a couple of attempts .

Hope you get it sorted . :)

i had the same issue on a mk2 it was the rear quarterlight window seal, fixed with a trip to autoglass.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies, sorry for the delay reporting back, I've been a bit busy.

The rear window seems ok, the light assembly was a little loose but tightening that that doesn't seem to be the issue. It seems to be the rear bumper that side. See the pic...

I'm guessing that should be water tight? i.e. that in normap operation water would trickle past there but that it shouldn't be making it into the car?

Time to take the rear bumber off and have a look at seals back there?

tightening the lights doesnt stop them from leaking mate you need to seal the fixings as this is where the watre gets in it wont be getting in where youve indicated as it isnt fixed to the inside of the car

Yeah I did look at the rubber seals round the screws and they seemed in fairly good condition. I'll look at sealing round them too though, I've bought the sealant - may as well use it. ;)

If I pour water in that red circle outside the boot with the boot open, it immediately trickles into the area in my first pic though?

Andy

sounds like the seam sealant has come away around that area seal ide seal it inside and out to be sure
