Lighting Problem

Featured Replies

hello all,

as some of you know i fitted a boost gauge a little while ago but with so many problems i removed the gauge and sent it back. well i bit the bullet and bought another gauge. a different with an led back lit light and i left the prevoius wiring in the car because i new that i was going to use it again at some point. so anyways i went to fit the gauge and the light doesnt work. this was fitted in the same way as my other one. and wiring in the correct manor. and so i connected it upto the battery and the light came on... bit strange because the wiring that im using is the radio ignition live. so i spent a few hours trying different things and trying different grounds to see if it was that and nothing. i dont know whether the radio out powers the light and it wont power up i dont know but know because of this my SIDE LIGHTS DONT TURN ON OR MY RADIO BACK LIGHT AND THE BULB IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. IVE DONT THE ONBOARD TEST AND THE LED ITSELF WORKS. and also the radio turns on as normal when you press the volume button but when you turn the ignotion on and engine on it turns off and the on button doesnt work as in the volume and to get it to turn on i have to press all of the buttons and it eventually comes on and then its fine. but its strange that the lights dont work? i went into the radion ground wire. well i accidently chopped through it. but i repaired it but nothing is working as above.....

all my boost gauge needed was a positive and a negative.... think i might put my car back to standard and send it to ford to see if i can get it done under warrenty as its a "fault" and not wear and tear if you get me?

many thanks and hope someone can help me...

ford will tell youve been at the wiring mate i wouldnt use the radio for that anyway ide have used a piggy back from the 12v with an inline switch or tappped into the rear of the light switch so the gauge lights up when the lights are on lets be honest you want it lit in the dark the radio uses the 1 hour mode etc which im assuming will interfere with how other things work. check youre fuses you may have blown 1 or 2

Yeah I will check my fuses. Is there just one fuse box on my car or more than one and also are they the mini type? It's strange because the old wiring was coming from the ignition on for radio and it worked on my previous gauge. So hooked up new gauge and nothing. So I thought I'd use a better ground so went for the earth cable for the radio and now side lights don't work? I haven't checked to see whether they come on with driving beam I'm yet to find out which will happen within the other and I'll post again. If they don't come on the it must be a fuse and nothing to worry about but if not then I've got a growing problem. Would it effect it's mot? If lights don't come on, on a certain command but will come on otherwise as in going from side to dipped?

There's the main board under the bonnet and another one under the dash on the passengers side.

It takes mini blade fuses.

Thanks mate for that. It's just so strange. I'll explain my situation again in case I've left anything out..

I used the old wiring from my old gauge to power the new gauge. this being a 12v same as the radio. Anyways the old gauge was using the ignition live and the casing for the radio as an earth. so I wired the new one up and nothing. So went to the battery and everything fine. So then I decided to find a better earth. So I went to tap into the earth for the radio but because I only had basic tools I made the mistake of going through the wire. So u repaired it and carried on. and still nothing. Now I don't know if I did it with ignition on or off but the radio still works ok. ( gauge not fitted now) so things that don't work now....

Front side lights both sides

Rear tail lights

Number plate lights

Radio back light

Instrument cluster bulb to say lights are on doesn't work but ran on board test and works fine???

And last is the driving light switch panel back light doesn't work....

So looking at your fuse download it looks like more than one has gone? What about the can bus? Or wouldn't the radio work?

So strange and I'm such an idout for touching the car. Wish I never done it now because if this isn't an easy fix this could cost me... :(

Many thanks for your help

TBH I recommend you get an auto electrician to have a look.

Sounds like you may have damaged a common earth or connection within the illumination loop.

Oh really well thanks for that. As far as I'm aware the radio back light comes on but when I turn lights on it doesn't work? Sounds about eight to you? Are the any modules that would control anything like that? Because to me if all those lights are not working it sounds as if it's one circuit?

Found out another time that might help is that my side lights work with ignition off in parking mode and bot side lights selected if that makes sence
