Key Not Working!

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I tried my spare key today that came with the car, and it doesn't work!

Yet another reason not to go back to my local Ford dealer.

When I bought the cat it came with 2 keys, a flip key with remote buttons on it, and another key with no buttons.

It's the one without buttons that won't work. It manually unlocks the car, and the ignition will turn and the engine turns over, but it wont fire up.

I assume it needs to be programmed, but how?

It's a 2008 Focus Titanium, Mk 2.5.

Any help or advice appreciated.

How long have you had the car and have you ever used the second key before now?

If not then either it was never programmed to the car or someone has broken/pinched the transponder chip.

Open the key to check whether the chip is present (small dark grey/black flat bit of plastic).

If it's present contact a few local auto locksmiths for quotes to sort the key out.

If it's not there have a check on ebay for a chip ot see if the lockdmiths can obtain one.

Don't go to Ford as they'll empty your wallet faster than a vindictive ex-wife.

ford are well aware that people will ask for 2 keys so they tend to add a key from a drawer of rubbish keys figuring no one checks or sellers add on a key they buy from ebay to be able to say look ive got 2 keys the ford came with 1 key only a remote key with 3 buttons and a solid spare i believe

Thanks for the reply's.

I have had the car for a year now, and hadn't tried the key before.

I popped it apart today, and it has got what looks like a chip inside. Just wont work!

It's going in on Thursday to a different dealer for the annual service, so I might ask them how much to fix....gulp!

Really annoyed with this, what's the point in giving me a key that doesn't work? The funny thing is that on the Ford ETIS site it states that my car came with 2 flip keys, and the spare one that doesn't work isn't a flip key. It actually isn't a Ford key, but looks like a Timsons special. Hate to think what would have happened if I actually needed it!

Vindictive ex wife...I've go one of them, and know what you mean! ;-)

mobile locksmith is far cheaper than fords ide have them do you a new key mate

Ford will always insist on doing a diagnostics check at about £80 then charge you for a new key (£75ish) and then cutting and programming (£120+).

I know for a fact that a diagnostic is a waste of your money as they just plug in a laptop and bog off on an hours tea break, order a key then call in a locksmith themselves.

Cut out the middle man completely, buy a new key off ebay gor £30 and pay a locksmith £40 - £50 to do it for you.

Basically all done for the cost of a diagnostic.
